Turbozutek: Any analogy that involves cars or toys or other tangible objects doesn't really work, since there is only one car. It can't be both in your garage AND in the parking lot at the same time. However, we are talking about COPIES of your image here.

So if I had two identical cars it would be OK for someone to fuck with one?

(sorry dude, you'll never get me to stop with the bizzaro analogies! )

See, it's still mine, copy or not. I took it. I can't stop Mary Jane Shit For Brains saving a copy to her desktop, but I'd like to think I could trust the site I'm, eh, entrusting it to?

We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit.

Some more attention to classifying places as being demolished, renovated or any other changes that would make a location no longer accessible would be really helpful.

You are still thinking in terms of physical property. You really can't compare a physical object such as a car (even if you had three cars) to an 'infinite goods' item such as a digital file.

1- Images sent into Wikipedia do not automatically become 'public domain'.

An oversimplification. Basically by uploading YOUR image to Wikipedia (I'm not talking about images owned by other people that you are claiming Fair Use on), you MUST release your work as a free license. Direct quote from Wikipedia:
All user-created images must be released under a free license. For purposes of Wikipedia, "free" does not merely mean that you don't charge for it, but it means that you allow everyone to use, alter, and redistribute your work for any purpose. This release is not revocable.

2- Why should we trust you with rights to our images? Didn't you keep UER passes in plain text for your own uses in the past?

That's a pretty stupid question. First of all, merely by posting this discussion thread, I am demonstrating my interest to care about your rights. Realistically, since these files have already been uploaded to my server, I could simply claim ownership and refuse to delete them. The only way you could get me to stop would be to take me to court, and that would be prohibitively expensive. But I'm NOT doing that, because I am not that kind of person. Anyway, even if this change does go through, it would only CLARIFY your rights rather than blur them.

As for your off-topic remark regarding passwords, the answer is no. Please keep this thread on-topic.

Anyway, despite the poll results being in favour of the new idea, I will not implement this system. The LDB will stay the way it is.

In case you are not familiar with how it is now, you can read the entire policy here, or the relevant section here:

Photographs
When you upload photographs to the UER Location Database,
you are granting UER a license to display the photos
alongside your name or credit. This license can be
revoked by you (and you only) at any time
, and the
affected photos will subsequently be removed as soon
as possible.

In the future, I may explore adding a choice that says "I grant UER rights to display this photo in perpetuity", but this would be OPTIONAL and would NOT apply to any existing content.

Since this issue has been decided, the thread is now closed.
