chernobyl

so im planning a trip to the chernobyl reactor 4 (the one that blew up in 1986) and i was wondering if anyone has ever been or has any contacts possibly. i plan to take thousands of pictures, including pictures of the graveyard of cars, busses, and helicopters that were used to build the concrete tomb around the reactor...there one of the most radiation covered areas but i think there is not enough photos of the graveyard...i will be meeting with locals and try to meet most of the population that have returned to there homes inside zone 1. i have even herd of a man with a tattoo of the explosion on his arm who makes a living catching fish from the reactors reservoir...so if anyone has any information or comments on places to check out while im there i would love to hear from you

im hoping to go within the year. and as far as the tours go i do plan on taking it but a family friend whent a few years back and he said if you have american money its not hard to bribe security to give you your own private little tour...they dont mind taking photographers for a little sight seeing, just have to have cash to wave around

...if you have american money...

Who wants American money in Europe when you can have €uros...

Anyway, a fellow explorer of mine take a private tour. It's not hard, but if you ask the wrong guys, you might get into a lot of trouble.

It's a militarized zone, so if you get caught and you don't have the right papers then you will get in to shit, lots of it. I too am planning a trip there in the summer, but I doubt I'll be able to get anywhere past the main tour. You're very limited in where you can go with this place, lots of control over radiation, and they even won't let you in if you're not fit (they test your body mass and such to see how much radiation you accumulate during your visit.)

V-tech = V-Tek = Veetek = Witek. Make it count, say it right.

Some of you chat shit. I have been and I wasn't tested for body weight or anything like that. Also, the tour, you can go where you want within reason. They give you the "it's dangerous" spiel but you tell them you don't care and they let you go. There are some things you can't take photos of like the employees and personnel clearing the Zone but apart from that, they don't give a shit.

You want to meet all the people back living in the Zone? How long are you going for? You could spend all day (and alot of money giving them food) driving round looking for them. Waste of time, go spend it wisely in Pripyat or some other derelict bits as there are time limits in place for Pripyat where you have to be out by x time, which was 5pm if I remember correctly.

Go through a real tour company, it will be cheaper than bribing all three gateguards and all his mates at the checkpoint with him. Not only that, it will be safer for you and easier. You are right in one regard, flashing a bit of cash or having a ready supply of beer can help persuade people along your line of thinking. Saying that, you don't really have to that much as the only restraints we had last time was Time itself and having to see everything in one go.

I'm going back next month and I certainly don't plan on looking at some old people for 15 minutes.

When are you guys going? If there's a few people could get a better group rate, maybe make sure we see the graveyard. As that site mentions it isn't included in the 'normal' tour anymore:

Important - Passage to "Rossokha" village, cemetery of military machineries - NOT AVAILABLE ON A REGULAR BASIS ANYMORE DUE TO THE ROAD CONDITION

I'm sure if we were willing to pay a bit extra they'd do it. I'd go this summer...

I'm flying out to the Ukraine on Monday.

Yes, you can pay a little extra to visit the vehicle graveyard. We were all set to go and sorted the price with the driver when the tourist yanks who came with us had to get back to Kiev to catch a train to Poland.

BTW, good luck trying to get into Chernobyl. Seems like a hard place to get into. There's also radiation in there, watch out man.
