The tagging has gotten bad.. I believe it's only begun too.. Once the workd starts to get out that one can tag another building, it can only go down hill. Compare this photo
http://farm4.stati...dbb1b43659.jpg?v=0
to the one that TB has on his flickr.... Or mine of the lobby elevator doors.
http://farm4.stati...14a8b548fc.jpg?v=0
I know it's not terrible yet, but it's not going to get better... The marble paneling going down the halls on the first floor have started to be tagged... I'm really jealous you guys got to see it pristine.. or closer to pristine...

As for the Port, I have a feeling they don't go in there very often, but I have this strange feeling they don't have an interest in preserving this building, though the master plan lists it as a "historical asset". The weirdest thing was that when we were there a couple of rooms looks as though the had started to be cleaned up, the trash had been swept into a pile but was just left in a pile. Then there were the other offices that smelt of rotting Chinese food for the current inhabitants of the building...

Hrrmm I want to go back I should make sure I don't try to go on the same day your friend has official access... Could be messy....

Holy moley. Exactly what kind of gratification can one get from vandalism like that? Those taggers must be like animals. Gotta mark their terrain in the most foul way possible. Yuck.

I had no idea it's gotten that bad from looking at the photos. I haven't been inside for a long time. Tagging had barely just begun on my last visit. I even remember the banister being fully intact (my first visit only).

A friend of mine has just about secured official access later this month...I wonder if the Port of San Francisco realizes the current condition? Not sure how often they go in there.

It's pretty awful in there now in parts. Homeless people....rotten food like Insainly Sound said...toilets all filled with waste and toilet paper. I am surprised because access to it is not all that easy, at least not the way I went in.

I was just really surprised by the bathrooms. That has to be the most disgusting I've ever seen exploring. I'd rather stand in a 30 year old outhouse than go in those bathrooms. I could smell them after being in for about 10 seconds, through my mask (which does asbestos and smells).

here's a few photos from the adventure, though i am fairly disappointed my last shot, the one i wanted most, wasn't in focus.........

I'm glad you had a good time YouOnlyLiveOnce, you both some great shots. I really like the lighting on your shot of the elevator lubricant and the one of the room with the fireplace.

Nice shot of the lobby insainly sound, it turned out really well.

So it's common to find interesting things in the abandoned, and wonder how they got there. In this building we found a screen play for a movie called "No One Sleeps". Pictures of the call sheet and screen play are on my Flickr. So I took it upon myself, and my avoiding doing ANY school work, to see if I could spot the scene in the movie where the character is in the building or leaving the building. I noticed two, but there is a place where I wasn't sure. In the movie, the building is an abandoned Police station where gay men are holding illegal sex parties... Anyways, here's a random screen shot!

This is in the yard outside of the building

the plot looks horrible, and what's with a serial killer going around and killing the HIV positive survivors in the gay bars? i can't believe you watched the whole thing, it's cool you researched the movie. i somehow neglected to think about looking it up. go figure...

I use to explore that building back in the early 90's.
Then it became really sketchy because of all the
crack head squatters that moved in. Then they sealed
it up again for awhile. Now it looks pretty fucked and
most of the contents looted since then. It should be
stressed that entering this building without a proper
respirator equipped with the right filters for high
particulate asbestos contamination, is not a wise idea
since it is densely permeated in the dust all throughout the building.
One of those hasmat disposable jump suits would'nt
be a bad idea either. The toxicity levels for asbestos are
so high that none of the local toxic cleanup contractors
will accept the job!

There is defiantly more asbestos that I had originally though there would be in the building. On the Second or Third floor (I don't remember which) it looked like the tiles had been ripped up. I'm assuming that at one point they were asbestos tiles. However I highly doubt that none of the local clean up companies will accept the job for that reason. I'm more inclined to believe that they haven't done anything with this building because the city doesn't know WHAT to do with the building.

Squatters defiantly are in there I've seen about three the seem to be inhabiting this site on a regular basis. They seem to stick to the third floor, and as long as you don't bug them, they don't bug you.

A couple of days ago I discovered a 99.999% vacated steel coil finishing factory by accident. It's made of two buildings and sits on a 2000 foot long lot measured diagonally. Since it was actually vacated, not abandoned, all the stuff was missing, but, whatever, finding a whole giant building or two provided me with that UE moment. There was enough stuff and files to tell me that it was a steel sheet processing factory in the office and that it only seems to have been in operation from 2002-2005, 2005 being the latest the fire extinguishers (which are all unused) were checked. Of course, I'm not the first to have been there, I can see that two or more loads of illegal dumpings have occured that's because the front gate is open. I did find there's a guard or a faker by that gate too!!! And He want me to know this is private property!! heh!! So I learned a new way back to where I came from.

So, inside the buildings is a lot of deep channels cut in the floor, a crane that travels on rails about 50 feet up, and a catwalk that follows the rails all the way around the building perimeter and more. There's no grafitti but there is some garbage in all the moat channels.

Ok, this accidental find, I was in a park (which I also "found"...) kicking back and I saw some insulation (from wires), uh oh. So I climbed up on this elevated set of railroad tracks and looked for what was getting stripped. There's this big blue building(s), about a mile and a half away that I follow a trail of insulation along some other railroad tracks. So, in the building the ground level wiring is stripped out as well as the crane catwalk level. It doesn't look like the scrappers have gotten to the lights at the very top of roof. Cool huh?
