So after, there was the one officer who was the inquisitor "WHAT THE FUCK IS PHOTOGRPAHY TO YOU?!?!?! THERE'S NOTHING IN HERE TO PHOTOGRAPH!!!"

Then he said "NO! I'LL TELL YOU WHAT YOU LITTLE FUCKS WERE DOING! YOU WERE SPRAY PAINTING YOUR TAGS IN THERE AND PHOTGRAPHING YOUR OWN TAGS! AND DON'T FUCKIN' LIE BECAUSE I HATE LIARS!!!"

Then the one cop was like "YOU FUCKIN' DUMB IDIOTS, HOW OLD ARE YOU GUYS ANYWAYS?!?!?" We answered, we are all 23 and he's like "23? 23... 23... YOU'RE ALL FUCKIN STUPID FOR COMING HERE, YOU'RE ALL GETTING CHARGED FOR BREAKING AND ENTERING, HOW FUCKIN' STUPID IS THAT?!?!?"

Wow. They sound REAL PROFESSIONAL. Do you live/work in the city the cops are from? If not; I'd have a chat with the DA about how unprofessional the cops were. They're supposed to treat ("supposed") you with at least some degree of respect. Unless you started smart mouthing them. I mean good cop/bad cop routine all right; but it sounds like you'd have a case of police harassment there.

I live in London, Ontario. Yes, they were London Police. We never once mouthed them off, not even once. We never interrupted what they had to say and we always spoke with genuine. What does DA mean? I wouldn't mind complaining about these guys, however I don't remember their names. I believe I have the name of the officer who issued me the ticket... His name might be written on it.

I never thought once in my life that cops were actually like that. So fuckin' rude, it still infuriates me to this day.

District Attorney; they are the ones in America who are responsible for prosecuting you. But also any problems you may have against a particular police member you can voice to them; if they get enough complaints they can look into it. While Judges will usually side with the police force DA's have (in some respects) more power and more say. I know of people who have gotten arrested; spoken to the DA about an officer being out of line and the DA has agreed with them the officer was out of line.

I looked it up Canada has a position similar to Crown Attorneys.

I didn't realize you were located in Canada, I don't know whether they can get away with talking to you like that. But I would think they should be showing some degree of respect. I mean cops can do whatever they want (or think they can); and yell and try and intimidate you, but they shouldn't be using vulgar language or addressing you as a "FUCKING IDIOT"

If there is a place (Court) you can go to argue the ticket. I would; but when you get in there I would bring up how disrespectful and unprofessional the cop was to you.

Really, I don't see you getting out of the ticket, maybe community service, but I would make damn sure that the DA's know how their officers are treating people.

I was out exploring an old WWII site a few weeks ago, found a small water treatment bldg. A little further down the way I spotted a small construction trailer up on a hill. As I made my way up the hill I spotted the windshield and roof of a car. I froze, the roof was white and the windshield looked new. I slowly backed down and headed to a spot where I could get a better look without being spotted. I crept up through woods on the side of the hill. I peeked over the rise and really couldn't make out the car, though I thought it was a cruiser. As I was taking out my binoculars, a dog started barking, a large german shepard. I remained still careful not to make a sound. I was confident in my hiding spot and had not been seen. After 15 min and no longer hearing the dog, I slowly made my way down the hill and used my main exit path.

#1 Always scout your target
#2 Movement attracts attention
#3 If you have a good hiding spot, stay there
#4 Always trust your instincts
#5 Make multiple exit plans

Had I been bagged, I wouldn't have run. I would have told them that I was looking for parts of the WWII camp that was there before the Industrial park. I used to explore it when I was a kid. Cops can be a-holes, but your not going to win against them, so just try and not be against them. Even 10 peoples word often doesn't carry against one cop.

So after, there was the one officer who was the inquisitor "WHAT THE FUCK IS PHOTOGRPAHY TO YOU?!?!?! THERE'S NOTHING IN HERE TO PHOTOGRAPH!!!" and the other cops were talking in the background like they were bullies and shit. and I said "Sir, we find beauty in abandoned architecture, there's alot of unique machines and designs to photograph in there, I can assure you." Then he said "NO! I'LL TELL YOU WHAT YOU LITTLE FUCKS WERE DOING! YOU WERE SPRAY PAINTING YOUR TAGS IN THERE AND PHOTGRAPHING YOUR OWN TAGS! AND DON'T FUCKIN' LIE BECAUSE I HATE LIARS!!!" Us 3 looked at each other all confused and I blurted out "YOU WANT TO SEE MY PICTURES THAT I JUST TOOK? I guarantee you all that our pictures contain nothing of that nature. Our motto is to take photographs and leave behind footprints." So the other cops demanded to see our shots. We each showed each cop our shots from out cameras, and as i was showing the cop my pictures i was going into extreme depth about HDR photography and that's what I was doing, blah blah blah, and the cop behind him was like "OK... We don't need for the narration!" With a chuckle on his face as if we were stupid. and I said "We may look young, but that doesn't mean we're vandals. We don't believe in that type of thing." Then the one cop was like "YOU FUCKIN' DUMB IDIOTS, HOW OLD ARE YOU GUYS ANYWAYS?!?!?" We answered, we are all 23 and he's like "23? 23... 23... YOU'RE ALL FUCKIN STUPID FOR COMING HERE, YOU'RE ALL GETTING CHARGED FOR BREAKING AND ENTERING, HOW FUCKIN' STUPID IS THAT?!?!?"

The blues in Los Angeles are the worst I ever run into. I had an experience very much like that. My brother, my dog and I had a run-in with the Los Angeles County Police once. They were stereotypical wannabe-gendarme thugs, brutish, hostile and extremely rude. The property I was at had wide open gates on all sides with paved roads that appeared on a street map. The doors to the abandoned buildings on the property were all unlocked, open, or missing entirely. There were ordinary civilians passing through. I had been seen there before, probably several times on several days by both civilians and police and they all said nothing and did nothing. One day though, my brother was stopped by three county police (different than the municipal police I had encountered before). I probably could have hid as they had not seen me, but I didn't. I explained all of the aforementioned circumstances that led me to believe I wasn't in any wrong being there, but they either didn't buy it, or didn't care. They got my brother to go check out the posted property no trespassing signs, which I said I ignored because they were labelled in such a way that they could be missed entirely and it appeared everyone else was ignoring them anyway, including people then on the grounds. They told yelled at me, threated to take my dog, and told me repeatedly that I was not intelligent. They were probably the most hostile, insulting, rude men I have ever encountered. I have a way of aggravating law enforcement, but I was too shaken up and frustrated to attempt comebacks such as "Well, I may not be intelligent, but at least I know I can still get a job as an LA cop." My brother advised against it in the future anyway. But being truthful and reasonable in this case had no profit at all.

No matter what I did or said or was in possession of (cellular phone, digital camera, flashlights and wallet) they didn't like it. One officer was angry because "You were going to take pictures of my buildings" and yes he did say "my buildings". They let us go without a fine, somehow though.

Though perhaps impractical for most of you, it occurred to me that in this particular place, I think the blues would have been less likely to bully me if I had been with my 9-year-old brother and/or my weird, ancient great-grandmother who doesn't speak English, both of whom probably would be interested enough and physically fit enough to explore. The blues did not seem interested in looking for the elderly woman we mentioned who may have still been on the grounds with us, but maybe they just didn't believe me.

Maybe I should have turned my dog loose before they saw me, and said we were chasing the dog. Since we were in an area where she could easily be cornered, I wouldn't need to worry about not catching her.

Probably the biggest mistake was to allow them to separate us. My brother thought that they separated us to make me more prone to intimidation. What I learned is, try to stay together if possible. If they separate your group, you will be more vulnerable.

So I ask two questions:
What do you do if the blues are just bad?
Is all interaction with law enforcement in the United States made worse if you are black?

So I ask two questions:
What do you do if the blues are just bad?

State: "I have nothing to say to you; I am leaving now" And start walking away. Which only works on foot; In a vehicle it would be "I have nothing to say, I do not consent to any warrantless searches, can I go now?"
The next step is: "Are you holding me against my will?"
Refuse to talk to them, you have the right to remain silent. Use it.
If arrested keep your mouth shut. Don't talk to anyone, refuse to answer any questions without a lawyer. Post bond.

File a Complaint. Get a civil suit lawyer, file a suit for false arrest, excessive force, whatever you can. Even if it leads to nothing; they will be hesitant to mess with you again.

If you really want to nail them back. Go to the media. Assholes in power REALLY care about their PUBLIC IMAGE, to some that's the ONLY thing that matters. See if you can get your story on the local news, state news, and then nationwide news.

Is all interaction with law enforcement in the United States made worse if you are black?

Only if you're dealing with a racist cop. But then again, you can pull the race card if you go to the media or a lawyer. It's an unfair/asshole thing to do... but what goes around comes around.

Don't break the law and you don't have to worry.

Haha, urban exploration IS illegal. But we dont care. Its trespassing, and sometimes, breaking and entering. But usually, as long as you aren't vandalizing anything, or stealing anything they will let you off with a warning.

Seattle police are especially fucked too. They're assholes and also really paranoid. Even when I'm not in Seattle for UE related activities, they usually blind be with their spotlight as they drive past. Good thing kids make pipe bombs for asshole like that nowadays.

Every time I have ever been in a UE situation where the Police were unavoidable, I have always just explained what we were doing and inevitably we were always let go, usually with some kind of remark along the lines of "If I catch you again, your getting a ticket." or "Next time I wont be so friendly." But never has there been anything serious that came from it.

Alot of fear of being "booked", but never any actual UE related "bookings". :p

But now let us descend to greater woe. Already every star sinks that was rising when I set out, and too long stay is forbidden.- Dante

A friend and I were exploring a government water purification system today. We cam out of a drain and someone must have called the cops. ten minutes later we see a police helicopter and like 6 squad cars circling the area. My hair is dyed bright green so I put on a hat and my friend and I traded clothes and split up. we headed home separately and met up later. neither of us got caught. I can see why they would be paranoid about two mysterious people in the water purification system. Maybe they thought we were terrorists poisoning the reservoir. It was pretty nerve rattling having all those cops around.

Because carrying a fishing pole with you is really practical.

A collapsible fishing pole folds down smaller than your tripod. Seriously if you are going in drains or trying to access sites along rivers; why the hell not? It's not like it's a heavy piece of equipment. I believe the term is "credibility prop" Leave the DSLR at home and bring a P&S to "take pictures of your catch". Also, my dad and I have got caught a few times by property owners fishing from their land and we have never been asked to leave; just that we don't leave any garbage behind.

I've had an similar experience. Now, this is my only true encounter with the police, ever. But, like you and your friend, me and mine were quite confident in what we were doing.

Any ways. We had gotten up to the roofs of some building with a warehouse, the place was for lease, we were looking for a way in. Walking to the other side after exploring most of the place, near these train tracks that run directly beside the place was a big spot light. Confused, we watched it for a bit and sort of forgot about it (figured it was a docked train). Nope, we hear sirens, many sirens. I saw the police speeding down the large street a block over. So we walked and saw someone up on the roof as well (it did not click in that it was the police). Me and the person I was with decided it would be best to walk over and try to talk to them. The one officer was looking directly in our direction but because it was very dark on the roof, he must have no seen us. We both said hello in a strong voice and began slowly walking towards them. As soon as we stepped one foot - "GET DOWN, GET DOWN RIGHT NOW, DO NOT MOVE, YOU ARE UNDER ARREST". The flash lights come on and then it clicked. "What the hell are you guys doing up here? Tagging shit up? You fucking kids". Once we told him we weren't doing that he immediately jumped to "Where is your weed? I know you've got some weed" My friend replied snarkly "Nah man, not tonight! We wish though!" (silly move but we got them to chuckle). We were there on the ground for a good 5 minutes while they searched our bags and cameras.
"You two faggots taking naked pictures of each other up here?"
"What kinda gays do this shit"

Both of us: "Bwahahahah, no!" trying to control how stupidly funny those questions were. They also liked my friends hair for some reason, they found it amusing. Long strips of hair that go down as sideburns.

We explained to them what we were doing and they then began to shut-up as our level of authority took place. They were pretty big ass holes but nothing too bad. They let us up, we packed our stuff and walked in front of 4 officers down to the ladder which we scaled.

Apparently they called in 5 cars for this. We got the usual
"Trespassing is illegal, blah blah"
"Well, it was all for the art!"
"Well it is illegal!"
"I know.."

"Good night officers!"

"Get 'outa here!"

"Sorry for distrubing you!!!" as we're walking away. A very comical experience.

Let off with a warning and we went on our way. Laughing like maniacs once it all sank in, it was really funny after the hole ordeal.

I figured I would be a bit more timid and scared, but the opposite occured. I imagine most of you have felt the same way, yes?

Moral of the story: Just be completely honest and direct with them, even if they're all still hiding in the closet. Canadian cops are good guys, but they certainly can't hop fences (too many Tims runs I imagine.)

This was mentioned earlier by TheVicariousVadder in that minimal responses are best. I am considering such a response the next time I encounter a police officer. If you work on the premise the police officers get a kick out of making the lives of selected citizens as miserable as possible, then give them no quarter. Be emotionally deadpan, "play dead" in the social sense, much as one would do to protect themselves from an digressive bulldog. The hope is that they will lose interest as a schoolyard bully would seeing that there is no personal profit in it.

For the US at least (and most of Canada and the Western world), searches are something that any lawyer worth his or her books would advise any client from consenting to. If you have UE gear in your bag, this leads to the establishment of the "intent" part of the prosecutor's case. You are under no obligation to consent: remember that it is the state's burden of proof to show that you are guilty rather than prove that you are innocent.

Police: "What's that?" *points to tripod*
Me: "It's a tripod, with a camera on it."
Police: "And that bag?" *points to double-fist-sized bag*
Me: "First aid kit." (Did not mention 20' rope in bag)

Sometimes it's nice to have no big bag at all. Although I'm not sure what else a tripod could be, but maybe 3 lb of black-painted metal looks scary when you're the one officer stopping 3 people walking down the road.
