McGill University Steam Tunnels

As an employee of McGill, sometimes I get a firsthand look at the old infrastructure such as the steam tunnels....I also sometimes overhear information about said infrastructure: apparently some of McGill's old steam tunnels that date back to the very early days of the campus are beginning to collapse. I'm not really surprised, I mean you can look around the downtown campus and see how the University is letting beautiful old mansions crumble and decay. It's just too bad, because the possibility that the steam tunnels might be gone soon is sad....it's too bad that it is this very danger of collapse that would prevent any of us from attempting to get one last look....I'm almost tempted to initiate a last-ditch tour effort with the University's administration...

I have definitely been to that website, but others may not have, so thanks for the link! I would have loved to have explored with those dudes...

As I get more news on what's going down, I'll keep UER posted. It would seem that renovations to the steam tunnel system are to start soon in front of the James building, as they have recently begun to clear snow from that space. Lucky me, I have a view from my office over that area! Maybe some good photo opps once they "dig in"....

Be careful in your explorations as now McGill has added cameras and locked doors to the system. Last time I checked (several years ago now) these were not extensive, but who knows what's going on in there now! If you're persistent you'll definitely find an entrance, because there are a lot of them and I sincerely doubt that McGill knows where all of them are or has the resources to secure each and every one.

A good place to start is the tunnel map.

last time I checked (2 days ago) the only difference I've encountered was light and two lid secured at McTavish. Talking about the reservoir here, we can't say it's really more secure... I mean hey, if mister Laden wanted to get there he would with or without cameras...

Glad to ear from you!

Hi Tux,

Those maps are no longer on the mcgill server. Have you saved the Autocad ( .dws or .dwg) files that was available back then? I could make a high version of them in a standard format.

I unfortunately no longer have the original file. I'd sure like to get my hands on it though. I hope the map helps people explore McGill though. Even with the limited detail it has, it's still useful.

I'm not back. I was just curious and saw that two of my favourite topics (the McGill steam tunnels and the CCUM) were being discussed so I decided to drop in and out. I doubt I'll be visiting frequently.

I hope I don't sound like a tool in that movie! I was like "Umm... here's the history I remember, it's probably very inaccurate. I uh... really like this building? It's cool."

Back on topic... I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who's been inside the tunnels lately. I doubt there's much danger of any part of them collapsing. When we were actively exploring them a few years back renovations on them were being actively done and for the most part they were in good condition. No huge cracks or anything. The stuff about the cameras I in fact only heard secondhand from Reduxzero who visited during Opex '95 and reported back to Mokonax that he'd seen cameras and a door in the tunnels that was previously always open had been closed and locked. I took it as a sign that McGill was getting security conscious and I haven't been back there since.
