Undeveloped film at locations

What is the general opinion?
In the quest to learn more about a family in an abandoned house, apartment, etcetera, is it acceptable to purloin and develop film found in the location, or would this be too much against the mantra of the urbexer taking only pictures? (Well, technically, you would be taking pictures, just not your own.)

Nice play on words-you may've just found a loophole in the UER creed! My advice: do what you think you should, "take only pictures, etc..." is a guideline to follow, not a set-in-stone rule. While many here(myself included)feel taking things from the site is disrespectful to the owners(especially the ones that passed away without anyone to leave the property to)and/or other explorers(because they, too deserve to see the site as well-preserved as possible), quite a few others(myself also included)occasionally find things in sites they feel the need to take with them for preservation purposes. I very rarely take things-one exception was an old farmhouse next door to my grandparents apple farm in Kansas. It was left to rot by the owner, who only kept the property for the land, and vandals were slowly tearing the house apart. My brother, a couple of my cousins and myself hopped the fence about 10 years ago to check the place out and found it full of deserted possessions of the owner's relatives(the one's that used to actually live there, which was quite a while ago). I happened upon a few old British coins(none had any value beyond the coin's actual worth)and a handful of old marbles. I decided to take them with me before we left, and I still have them to this day. For some reason I felt the need to preserve these items, I can't explain why exactly, but I have absolutely no regret for taking them-some long-forgotten treasures of a now-grown to old age child are treasured once again by me...(slightly long-winded and off-topic, sorry)
So, like I said, you do what you what you feel is right, just be respectful, and don't get too carried away-this is exploring, not shopping, after all! Don't walk in looking for things to take, and try to remove as little as possible and leave as much undisturbed as you can if you do feel the need to take something with you!

I was thinking about how people seem to read the Bible a whole lot more as they get older; then it dawned on me - they're cramming for their final exam...

Personally, I would indeed. In fact I was kicking myself the other day for a similar moral issue.
There was a place that we had visited, that had old pictures on the kitchen counter. I thought it would have been amazing to take them home and scan them for all to see. BUT when I went back they were gone, or destroyed. I guess my morlas now say that if I would have took them they would have still been around.

Only thing I can suggest is do your own processing on that film you NEVER know what is going to be on it. And I am sure your friendly neighbourhood processing store wouldn't be too friendly if they found something nasty on there.

We found extremely old film and negatives at my great grandparents' house, which had basically been abandoned (i'm still kicking myself for not making my grandparents keep it up)

I'd definitely develop them, it's an awesome find.

Why couldn't one take the film, develop it, and then return the film to the site, if ethics play into it that much. You've got your pictures so you've completed your research objective and you've returned what you had taken for others to see for themselves.

That makes sense, or take pictures, scan them and then return them. If anything you are doing society a favour in remembering who lived there, it's almost a sign of respect. In a sense. It's hard to define where this falls under though.

And there's the possibility that the film could be, I don't know the term for it, degraded?

I asked because I recently found a disposable camera from lord knows when in the fridge at a house near my hometown. I think I'll prolly get a friend in the photography classes to crack it open and take a look at what's inside, as was suggested. And then when I get back to town, I'll put the pictures back in the fridge.

I would take it, there might be history of the building on the film!

I recently came across a box of old cameras at a location. We were laughing about how old the cameras were but to be honest,it didn't occur to me to check for film. It is a rather hard question to answer I guess,I don't know if I'd have taken them them had I thought of it. Not likely though,I'm of the mindset that it's harder,if caught,to say that "I'm only here to take pictures' if your pockets are full of loot. And like someone said,it's cool to leave the interesting stuff so that other explorers can enjoy it,too.
Just my opinion,though.

My biggest fear is that there would be something on the film that would get me in a load of trouble. I would only do it if I could develop it myself.

There are a lot of sites out there for people who find film. The most common way is to look in cameras in flea markets. How could you not do it?

I've found a lot of abandoned pictures in sites before, and one time a whole roll of negatives, but it's sufficed to just photograph them with my own camera and move on.

If you find photos, maybe you should have brought a portable scanner. And if you find film and get it developed, you should put some prints back in the building where the film was.

The downside to being into UER is when you are also an antiques collector and appraiser. I have yet to find anything of a value that would make it worth taking but when and if that day ever comes, I am going to be standing in a run down place with a conundrum on my hands.

In this case, I would take the film, get it developed and then return it. There is no reason to keep the film if you have the pics and then you can return the building to the state in which you found it by replacing the missing rolls. I don't see any harm in that and if you do get it developed and scanned in, I would also be interested to see what the pictures are of.
