Just in case anyone's missed this, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts has acquired the formerly abandoned church on Sherbrooke Street and is currently using it to exhibit a collection of Sulpician heirlooms. Both the building (particularly the windows) and the collection are well worth checking out.

The current exhibit closes December 9th, after which time the church will become the museum's second permanent pavilion of Canadian art. The church interior will be renovated before reopening, making this your last chance to see it in its original glory.

News release

The Artistic Legacy of the Montreal Sulpicians
September 13 to December 9, 2007

The Company of the Sulpician Fathers was founded as part of the great movement of Christian evangelization and renewal that grew up in seventeenth century France. In 1657, fifteen years after the founding of Ville Marie, the first Sulpicians arrived in the New World, where they became Seigneurs of the island of Montreal and were appointed priests in perpetuity of the parish of Notre Dame, the only one on the island until 1866. Their standing made them leading players in the development of the colony’s art, architecture and town planning; they commissioned major projects and acquired outstanding works of art by the best artists for their chapels, presbyteries and priests’ residences. This exhibition of one hundred works will commemorate the Sulpicians’ importantcontribution to the history of art in Canada from the French Regime up to the present day (1657-2007).

All exhibitions at the museum are free until January 27 2008.

I think it was officially closed and not use for about less than a year (10, 11 months). The Museum has made it a priority to safegard the church heritage and patrimonial architecture. I've seen the plans for the conversion and it's well done.

I had the pleasure of singing many times at Erskine and everytime, it was an awesome experience. It is one of those rare place were you could actually see the people in the room well. Most of the time, when you're on stage, with all the lighting, you don't see much of the audience. Plus, the acoustic was great. And I remember my father spending an evening outside (in winter) on the front steps cause he arrived late to a concert and it was sold out...He was mad about not being able to come in.

Thanks, guys. I'm sure you know the history better than me. The current condition of the church interior is actually pretty good. It just needs a little fixing up here and there.

Anyway, don't miss the Sulpician exhibit. Some of the pieces are very impressive.

Church was never abandoned as there are still tenants in the back part of the building. The roof has been redone completely a few years back and now some of the problems are about the tower on the corner of the street; stones are losing bits here and there so a large tarp had to be setup to prevent accidents.

Interior of the building is very nice and doesn't show a lot of structural problems. The construction work will mostly be in the back area along the conversion of the basement into a exhibition area. This will surely connect to the existing tunnel which connects the north and south buildings of the museum.

A nice project indeed.
