|  | | | Yeah, that's a pretty interesting series. The Gazette's main page has links to all the articles in the series, but part 2 (the one you posted) is the most interesting one so far.
Part 3 (Monday's installment) made reference to an abandoned niobium mine near Oka. They didn't publish the map online, but it looked to be about here from the paper version.

If it's the mine I've been to and scouted a few times, there's a sign that says it's HIGHLY radiactive at the entrance and really, I'm not equiped for this nor do I want to test how true the sign is...

Je vous déconseille fortement d'aller là.
Dans la même émission, il parlait aussi du radon, un gaz incolore et inodore hautement radioactif qui provient de la décomposition de l'uranium et qui s'infiltre dans les sous-sols de plusieurs maisons de la région. Selon le reportage, la radon serait la deuxième cause de cancer du poumon au monde, après le tabac et la plupart des gens de la région ne savent même pas s'ils ont du radon dans leur maison ou pas...

| | | | The radioactive warning appears to be related to uranium and radon content in the mine, and the risk of stirring it up. The Niobium and Columbite deposits apparently have no specific biological risk, but are at least irritants.
Anyway, there's Uranium in there, so it's considered radioactive, and there are tonnes of stern warnings to avoid it. It's probably no more radioactive than your average power plant 
But who knows... without a geiger counter or some sort of exposure meter, you won't be able to tell what you are risking. Don't go in without a knowledgable guide.
The other thing about it is that the mine itself is probably VERY unsafe. Abandoned mines are considerably more dangerous than your average urban wreck.
Urban development is what happens when the planners are trying to figure out what to do. By the time they have it sorted, the development has already happened. |

St Lawrence Columbium Mine, Oka complex, Oka, Deux-Montagnes Co., Québec, Canada
Inactive niobium mine with two open pits and underground workings (now water filled), in the Oka carbonatite complex. The mine opened in 1961 and ceased opertions around 1977. During its operation it was one of largest niobium mines in the world. Significant reserves of pyrochlore (the main ore mineral)remain at the deposit. La Trappe, shown in the earlier locality hierarchy is incorrect. It is a nearby monastery and has nothing to do with the mine.

| | | | based on the info in the gazoo article you linked, it would make perfect sense that the mine is water filled. It is in the middle of an aquifer.
The surrounding structures (if there are any) would probably be pretty interesting to explore.

Je suis allée y'a 2 ans avec un ami qui a un geiger et j'ai pu aucune idée de ce que ça indiquait parce que j'ai fait un DEC en sciences humaines, pas en sc. pures pis que je peux pas lire ces affaires-là mais je me souviens très bien de l'aiguille qui s'excitait le poil des jambes quand on était à l'entrée de la mine... Assez en tout cas, pour faire revirer de bord le professeur de sciences qui était avec moi.

Elle a rapetissé pas mal ma trompe suite à ma visite de la mine. Elle brille dans le noir en plus, ta langue aussi suite notre rencontre!

Comme je disais dans ma présentation, c'est à cette mine que j'ai fait mes classes en exploration urbaine!
Vous savez peut-être que la mine à ciel ouvert et les galeries noyées attirent à chaque année de nombreux plongeurs? D'ailleurs, au moins trois y ont trouvé la mort (par narcose à l'azote, et non par radioactivité!).
Faut vraiment être motivé pour aller se foutre sous l'eau à cet endroit! L'eau, d'un vert radioactif ahurissant, n'est pas particulièrement invitante! Quoi qu'avec un peu d'imagination, ça peut avoir des aires de paradis tropical!
En attendant d'avoir accès à mes archives photos complètes, je joins trois images assez médiocres mais qui donnent une idée de la place... La tour d'extraction fut détruite vers 1995 ou 1996.

Au fait, depuis qu'ils ont mis à terre cette tour d'extraction, je suis "passivement" à la recherche d'une structure dans le même genre. Si quelqu'un à des suggestions, je suis preneur!
