When they say a mask is NBC, is it the mask (rubber) or the filter?

when they they say the Mask is NBC is means it's capable to protect you from products used in a Nuclear, biological or Chemical attack. This means that the mask will not be penetrated by these products. Masks like these still require a NBC filter to work properly against NBC materials.

not really, the so called "Micky Mouse" gasmask was an attempt to make gasmasks more appealing towards children. It was made with an agreement from Disney but real production was never started and only very few masks have reached the market and thus making it a very hard to get gasmask. Getting a mint example (if even possible, because the quality of used material sucked) would require an amount of money running into thousands of dollars. It's still on my list of Gasmasks to get for my collection but I'm afraid I will never have one.

I collect military stuff. I've seen them for sale twice. You're right about the pricing. The cheapest I've seen them for is about 1500.

Yeah, that's because those disney collecting freaks are even worse than gasmask collecting freaks.

I don't currently own one, but I'm planning to explore a school soon that was closed due to asbestos. I figure if I plan to keep exploring, I should try to keep my asbestos exposure to a minimum. I found this one on Home Depot's site for $38. If they have it at the local store, I'll probably buy it.

This is all such wonderful advice. I haven't got a mask yet, and I'm definitely not exploring anymore until I get one. I think a mask is one of the most important tools you can have, besides a cell phone. When I finally come up with the money to get one, I'll be wearing it on all explorations. Better safe than sorry is what my mother used to say.

Third on my list. I guess I'm more concerned about personal safety than documentation. I just have "falling-through-floor-and-getting-trapped-under-heavy-objects-and-not-being-able-to-call-for-help phobia."

For sake of comfort, I don't always wear a mask when exploring. I do it only if there is a lot of dust and obvious junk floating around in the air, or if there is obvious signs of asbestos (or a suspicion of it), or dried animal feces all over the place. Also have to be careful of kicking dust up when exploring, even when you started out there was no dust/junk floating around. The mask are also not comfortable, but should be worn in appropriate environments.

Usually I can tell if I need my mask when I scout out the place in the daytime. There may be hazard signs or telltale signs that one can miss if you just go at night.

We need to keep our lungs nice and pink on the inside so that they will last us a reasonable lifetime.

I'm going hunting for mysteries. Where's my flashlight?

I'm planning on using my Guy Fawkes mask until I get an appropriate and certified asbestos mask.

I have a sort of respirator fetish if you could call it that.
I'm always looking for the coolest looking masks, not sure why other then if you find the right one you could look like a total pro of sorts.

So my question is this:

How do I go about acquiring masks in particular military style ones, and full face masks?

I know ebay but I'm weary about dealing on ebay.... especially when it comes to NBC rated respirators.... last thing I need is Big Brother kicking in my door, because I happen to have ordered 7 masks with NBC rating from a person with ties to some extremist terrorist organization.

So bar ebay, where else can I find respirators?

I use this kind. Protects against mold, asbestos, pesticides, dust.. just about anything. Don't have to use it too often though.

You forgot - it also protects against hobo smells! I can go into disgusting bathrooms that others dare not enter....well, at least until the smell overpowers the mask. Takes a minute for that to happen, though. Make sure you get the P100 filters that are combination organic vapor for full protection.
