Equipment needed for draining

I found a bunch of watershed maps for my area, and I'm thinking about doing some draining. But there are some things I would like to know before I do. Like what should be taken with you (besides a flashlight). And also, how dangerous is draining in the city? I don't wanna be pokin' around down there, and suddenly have a big wall of water come and take me out. So yeah, any help would be cool. Thanks.
