Woohoo!

From Saturday's Gazette:

Where no blogger's gone before
STEVE FAGUY, The Gazette
Published: Saturday, September 01

Blog: Controleman
URL: controleman.wordpress.com
Author: Marc xxxxxxxx, 19
Updated: About three times a week

Student Marc xxxxxxxx says his parents aren't crazy about the fact that their son is an urban explorer, skirting laws against trespassing to take photos of Montreal's abandoned buildings and sewers. But, he says, "I haven't been in any real trouble yet."

His blog, Controleman (a screen name he's used for years) catalogs his many trips to abandoned, unused or inhabitable areas with other urban explorers, and is filled with pictures.

A recent post shows pictures of ancient, red-brick sewers 10 feet in diameter. To the city, it represents part of the crumbling, antiquated infrastructure that needs to be replaced. But to this blogger, it's hidden architecture that must be explored.

"At first, I was only taking photos for the fun of it ... walking with friends here and there," xxxxxxxx said. "One day, as we were walking close to Silo No. 5 (near the Old Port), a girl came up to us and asked if we had ever gone inside. We obviously said 'No' but that we would like to try. Eventually, we found our way inside. When we left, the girl told us there was a community about this kind of photography. After that, I got interested in building histories, not that I know much of it, but I do like to search a bit."

xxxxxxxx doesn't go into detail about where some of the photos are taken or how he gets access, lest the city block a means of entry or someone gets hurt trying to explore the way he does.

"A walk in the park can end really badly; a walk in a drain can end much harder and faster."

As for the laws he's technically breaking, he's not losing too much sleep over it.

"I've been caught several times, but in three years of activity, no one made me pay any fine. Last weekend, about 15 of us went to the Redpath Silos and the cops showed up. Once they knew we were not doing graffiti, it became friendly."

Sample post: "Just as the day began, Tijeff, Maze and I headed to some old public toilets underground. No one would guess where it is, unless you already know it ... All the stairs have been blocked with cement, but there's still a way in. (We're not ghosts!)"

A friend of mine used to work at JCF and his boss told him (when my friend spoke about the silos as being in his interest) and the boss showed him this sealed up welded shut door of some sort and claimed that behind it was a tunnel that lead to the silos. He told me, and then it hit me... that must be the other end of the conveyor tunnel in the basement of the ladder side. I never went inside to investigate because I didn't have boots (in case there's a need to walk in it inside the tunnel at some point)

Another area I have never been to inside the redpath silos is INSIDE the silo tubes on the ladder side. I dont believe it is very easy to do if at all possible.

I think the silos are about 125 feet tall.. not 100% sure, but my estimate is at 100-125 feet.

JCF = J. C. Fibers.. next time you're at the silos... look across st patrick street and you'll see the JCF trucks.

oh, and you're crazy if you drop rope down into those because then you gotta climb back out! Also, I completely forgot what the surface of the ground inside those silos is like... I am trying to remember what noise it made when I dropped that beer bottle down that side.

I have the gear to get down and the gear to climb up. And with Dsankt we figured out where to hook...just missing : the rope ! And better trained than me partners !(I wouldn't have any non-trained friend to get down though...)

The floor might be similar to the other ones..

Well Nel, Make sure to let me know when you plan to do that! I am interested in seeing that! AND the pictures of that will be crazy! I think there's an Iron I-beam over that hole somewhere. You're gonna want a good quality rope, not that yellow rope I assume. Maybe they sell mountain ropes at that rock gym right across the street.

Mewthree...don't worry..

I won't do anything without serious professional rope (to get) and gear (which I have and already tested)..
And yes that's the beam !
