Subways

Today I was riding the subway when I noticed that at some stations there are some extra maintanance tunnels that seemed really exciting. I see that people got in because there were some tags around, and I think I have found an entry, where the train comes to the surface... But what are your experiences about subways? What to do, what not to do? What to avoid, how to sneak in, what dangers should be dealt with... ?

I was thinking of looking up some graffwriters or similar guys to get some info about getting down into the tunnels... But since I'm not involved in graff at all, I doubt I'd find anyone trusting me enough.

What do you say? Is it worth exploring at all, or is it too dangerous (either because of security and getting caught or normal hazards), or too advanced for a fresh explorer to infiltrate?

I would defiantly say it is way too dangerous and advanced for a new explorer.

Active subways are dangerous, moreover they take intrusions/intruders pretty seriously these days.

However what you are asking about is really at the the essence of what exploration is about.

only you can make that call

There is a great write up in Acess All Areas about Transit tunnels. Which should help you out a little bit should you decide to go for it.

Hm... I think I'll just leave it to rest. Tho if some taggers got in, then why wouldn't I?

Would going by night when there's no traffic help a little? I'm not sure about guards, the station I'd try to get in is not very guarded and above ground and I could climb in somewhere after the actual station onto the tracks.
http://preview.tinyurl.com/34hp7u - the first (start) is just a train caught on film, the second (which is the "end") is the metro station, and the farthest point is the entry... so there's quite a lot of fence to climb over, no need to do it as the diggers did on their video..

As 2Xplorations said this is the heart of true exploration. Isn't the uncertainty exciting... whether you do it or not you're touching on what makes this special. Savour every delicious moment but never forget the consequences.

You're playing with fire, approach it as such.

Well, getting a little more informed about the hazards down there, I think I'll leave it to rest for a while. I think if I'll ever go I'll need a guide down there, be it workers or security or anybody who knows the system properly down there...

I didn't completely give up on it, tho

It seems to me that the main problem would be if you were in the tunnel when a train came, because there is often less than a foot of clearance between the train and the tunnel wall.

Sounds like you've seen the subways in Budapest, please tell us more.

No, I wish though lol. Just what I've seen as a rider in Paris, D.C., etc... There is often little to no clearance, with signs announcing this. I'm not crazy enough to go in subways!

Well, afaik the Budapest tunnels were built after the French tunnels, and just been checking today- HARDLY 2-3 foots of clearance most of the time. But the places I'd explore are rather different - this is the place where the trains go above ground, hence it is some "parking lot" or sg. for the trains.

I plan to do a video the next time I pass by there, so that you'd see what I'm talking about... There's huge space inside there, with catwalks, 4-5 rails with only 1 being active, tunnels and iron doors... You just gotta get past those few meters with not much space - or not even that, you might just have to jump across the fence, climb down onto the rails and there you are...

If I went I definately went by night so that there'd be no traffic.

It seems more and more doable to me...

Tho, not now. I still gotta gain experience... Infiltrating the active subway system ain't easy as pie.

I love the subways of Budapest, they are really quite beautiful, and they run VERY deep. Oh, and they are on time. I really wish I could take a closer look at them. Perhaps on a tour of Europe

Aside from the rust-encrusted trains, they're okay... The whole thing is being renovated, they're quite pretty now. Tho, I think the most beautiful subways are in Moscow. Those are just fascinating.

Here in Seoul, they've started constructing sliding glass doors on subway platforms which prevent access to the tunnel. They only open when the train is parked and ready for passengers to enter/exit. There's not enough clearance to slip between the train and the glass wall. At the end where the driver would enter the train, there's a door with a keypad on it, and a sign saying NO ENTRY in English and a bunch of stuff in Korean about a W1,000,000 ($1,000) fine if you do somehow enter. A grand doesn't seem like much, but considering the average Korean income compared to the cost of living, it's substantial enough.

I took pictures with my cell phone recently. I'll upload them when I have time.

Sadly, the sliding doors aren't so much to prevent tunnel running as they are to prevent suicide by jumping in front of the train. . . This theory seems to be corroborated by the fact that subway stations near universities and economic centers have had these installed first.

If these were installed throughout the entire Seoul subway system, it'd be a pretty big deterrent as tunnels could only be entered in locations where they go above ground. You'd have no escape should a train come barreling down the tracks mid-exploration. However, it would also require a huge investment of time energy and money, as there are currently 8 lines and over 250 stations with a ninth line due to open next year.

I've never seen anything like this in other subway systems. Has anyone else?
