| | | This is St. John's Catholic Church, on the outskirts of Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. It's less than two miles from the Mississippi Sound and was essentially directly underneath Katrina's path when the storm came ashore. Apart from the massive A-frame beams, the entire structure was torn away below a height of about 12 feet, with the lone exception of the spiral balcony staircase, which possibly survived because it was relatively lightweight, porous, and bolted securely to the concrete pad. Less than a mile away, there are entire blocks where nothing remains but bare concrete foundations, but somehow the fact that the frame of this building survived serves to illustrate the power of a storm surge more vividly.

| | | Is that in Pass Christian, or at least on the Biloxi side of Bay St. Louis (the bay, not the town). I remember going to Mass at a church with that kind of architecture when we'd vacation in Gulfport when I was a kid.

It's in Lakeshore, which is sort of extreme western Bay St. Louis. About halfway between Pearlington and the Bay St. Louis bridge.
