Derelicted townsite somewhere north of Desert Center, CA

I was just wanting to know if anyone has been up near this area.
A friend and I were traipsing around the Lower Desert when we viewed some heavy equipment remains in the hills.
Upon driving up to said area, we encountered some ramshackle remains of what looked to be Quonset Huts, and further, a perfectly intact school.
The rest of everything was beyond a locked gate.
There appeared to be a live-in security officer on the site and we weren't about to take any chances of an unnecessary run-in with additional SFs creeping about.
As far as everything else, there appeared to be some warehouses and offices tucked into the side of a mountain, along with a mound resembling an open pit mine.
This looks like an excellent place to poke around more thoroughly in.

General Patton directed a tank training school up there during WWII. Look for remains of stuff I plan to go up there and walk around in the dirt someday. If you go up to Chiriaco Summit, theres a museum for General Patton and it has a bunch of tanks out in the yard. You might also want to see if you can check out that Kaiser open pit mine you mentioned. Theres also an old airport last operated in '92 up there. If you look around, theres a ton of stuff. As Dave said, that's an awesome area if you're into military history.

Id like to take an entire weekend to go around there, for anyone interested in Military stuff (especially WWII). Hooligan, do you think you can make it down sometime this coming winter season? No way im going out there in the summer. I have a metal detector id like to bring with me. If you look on satellite maps, you can still see old tank trails and roads where the camps were built around. Im sure we could find something of interest

This info is right on the money.
As some of you might already know, I drive a bigrig for "S.top W.eaving I.n F.ucking T.raffic".
I usually have hometime in Victimville for every two weeks I'm out.
Most of my runs have taken me in both directions on the 10. I've been to the Patton Museum, but I always got there when it was closed unfortunately.
When I get a good motorcycle, I plan on spending a few days traipsing about out there.
Nostalgic military remains were always fun to look at.
As for the open pit mine and everything related to it, I hope to find either a different way in, or get permission at the very least.
I also noticed a set of what appeared to be long, abandoned railroad tracks going to this site from the 10.
This could be part of a long defunct spur of an old SPRR right-of-way(now UPRR of course).

I became interested in the old camps when I kept finding these grid-like designs etched in the desert while tooling around in WikiMapia. Fascinating stuff! The old airfield near Desert Center still sees some use, and is apparently up for sale the last I heard.

The mine was served by its own railroad. It interchanged with SP by the Salton Sea at a place called Ferrum.

With that old railspur, I wonder if any service towns remain intact along that?
Time to bust out the bike and do a little trail riding.
Or get one of those maintenance trucks with the train wheels attached.
Not that would be so bad-ass.

I'd love to do it, and I expect that's the best time of year, too.

So how about we start using various resources (Google Earth, topo maps, reference books, web, et al) to start cataloging targets, either here or in the DB, and then maybe we can all try to agree on a prioritized list of places to hit later this year when the weather cools off, but prior to rain (flash-flooding & mud) becoming a concern?

I didn't see anything really interesting or town-like along the way in the Google Maps view. Since they were using diesels (Baldwins, then U30Cs), there were probably no service towns.

I imagine itll be perfect if the weather is dry. Shall we go ahead and set a date and plan for the best?

How does October 20 (sat) and 21 (sun) sound? If thats ok, we can start searching around for info on potential sights. I searched around for hotel and found some rooms for $60+ a night in the Palm Springs area. We can go out Friday night and end the outing on Sunday evening and easily drive home (the so cal guys at least).

So far ive found a whole bunch of mines, lots of camp remains from Patton, an old airstrip in the middle of Chocolate mountains, and theres always Eagle Mountain. Oh the trouble we can get into. Id also like to see the Patton museum. I would feel guilty being so close to Salton Sea.

I made a recent trip to Eagle Mountain. Came under the watchful eye of the prison security guys pretty quickly. Since they made it clear we were being watched, getting beyond the fence was an impossibility. I wish I had brought aerial photos - once I got home, I saw the way in.

Calico, the RR tracks in your photos look pretty abandoned. Do you know if there intact and how far they run. I have a couple of railroad speeders, gas powered maintenance cars and am always looking for abandoned track that wont catch anybodys attention.

Downhilleo,

I am certain the tracks have not been in use since the mine shut down. The spot I took those shots from was far too close to another mining facility to be unnoticed, but the whole desert out there is full of abandoned tracks running to long abandoned mines. Might I suggest you Google Earth "Desert Center, CA" and start looking at all the tracks in the area? You'll find some out of the way stretches.

I call it that one too, but I've seen a fair sHare of weaving.
So far, I've driven a Kenworth(6wk mentor), a Volvo, and a Freightshaker.
The Shaker took a dump, so now I'm stuck with the Volvo again.
Anywho, I really hope to venture back to this area again.
This time, it will be a 4x4 truck and backroads if we happen to discover any.
We could always say we got lost and we're trying to find the 10.
