| | Abandoned House? < on 4/28/2007 4:00 PM >
| | | I was out scouting a possible site, it seems abandoned and very easy to get into as the door is broken. The windows are all boarded up and the roof is falling apart. clearly no one would like to live in a house like this. On my scouting trip, I found am entrance and everything, but One thing bothered me, there was a satellite dish on the house, I was wondering if that means that someone lives in there
What do You guys think? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

| | | I would say the place is vacant, but if you don't want to take chances, just knock on the door, and if no one answers than, your probably good to go. But if someone does answer just have a plan ready... say your the milk man or something I don't know. Also monitor the area for any activity that might prove there are inhabitants living in the structure before you explore it. Hope I could help?

| | | Judging by the age of the boards and how new the satdish looks, my guess would have to be that it's probably something to do with a police investigation. Personally, I wouldn't go anywhere near the place unless/until I found out what was going on with it.

| | | Definitely consider the previous words of caution. However, to mitigate that, its a directTV satellite, which comes free when you order their service. Our house came with one on the roof, though we've never had the service. A previous owner just left it there. Probably the same case here? You can always get a look in, and you might be able to figure out pretty quickly how inhabited it is just from the state of things.

| | | that dish definitely looks like it was put up AFTER the window was boarded up. very creepy. i say this for two main reasons. 1) the dish looks newish. 2) the line is fastened to the wall in such a way that the cord dangles over the window. proceed with caution. maybe it's a vampire's residence who is hooked to satellite tv, or the cops. who knows.

| | | Want an easy way to tell if a house is occupied? Take some chewed gum and stick it so it is wedged against the door and the wall. Let it dry. If you come back later and the gum is gone or broken, you know the door is in use. Cheap and VERY effective.

| | | Do you have any other pictures of the house? This is very interesting to me. Please keep us posted on this... Perhaps its still being lived in?? I couldn't imagine living that way though, but there have been some places I've seen that looked abandoned that turned out to have someone living there. (And not bums or squatters, either) However, never with boarded up windows that I can remember.

| | | I would say abandoned. My personal opinion though. Yes, take precaution but the likes of it being active are slim. I'v explored places, including houses, with new, old, multiple, and no satellite dishes. I had no problem. People abandoned dishes, what if they died? If a family member died in my family, I would retrieve furniture and such, but not a satellite dish. Git 'r done.

| | | that dish looks extremely new... id be very careful about that building. keep an eye on it and see if anyone comes and goes over a few days then it might be safe if you dont see anyone. best advice i can give ya if you do go in, go light, and be prepared to run like hell if you need to. Speaking of running like hell, never hurts to plan your escape route before hand in case you need it. (old escape and evasion course coming to mind here) if you have to run, dont run straight to where you want to go. trying to lose whoever is one of those well duh ideas. plan a route that goes through trees, around houses, etc in case you need it.

| | | dish network also gives you a free dish with the service. Also the dish could be 10 years old and could still look new. they are built not to weather or what would be the point of it? If the place is sketchy just pay attention to it for a while. there is rural farm house by me that i didnt have a doubt in my mind that it was abandoned, only thing that gave me a heads up first was that it still had a mailbox, it was rusty but it still had it. I drove by it every day on the way to work and started to notice different things. there was always a old beat up ford truck parked there and sometimes it was gone. in the winter there was always tracks in the fresh snow to the truck. I've never seen anyone at the house, it has some boarded windows, extremely faded paint, roof needed replacement like 30 years ago, and it is incredibly grown up around the house. looked abandone for sure. then just last week when I drove by someone had laundry hanging on the line  if in doubt do more homework and be absolutley sure.

| | | Yep.... just scout it out a little better and pay attention.... Are there other signs of it being abandoned/ unoccupied, like the grass being overgrown, etc? But as for just going by the satellite dish.... they do get left behind. There are two of them on my house... and we just have cable..... They were there when we bought they place....

| | | I think it's abandoned, but there are better ways of checking. Note: mail box, power meter and water meter. PS. Keep in mind that someone cares enough to board up the window... that might mean something. [last edit 5/6/2007 9:46 PM by Glass - edited 1 times]

| | | Have you tried calling the assessors office? They can tell you who owns the building and give you a mailing address. Occasionally you'll have to get a pin number and give them some personal information for security purposes I suppose. From there you can get the phone number of the owner and find out future plans for the building. I've found most of the time (not that I've been doing this for a while) if it's a business and you tell them you're doing an art project they'll let you in. Is it as exciting as finding your own way in? No. Will they press charges against you? No. Let us know what you find out.

| | | i think a molehill has been turned into a mountain. this place looks really small. if you're afraid of the satellite dish, maybe hunt some easier game. there probably aren't aliens or FBI agents living in some massive basement complex and, if they are, you will only have to run 3 steps to be out the front door. however i guess the original poster hasn't replied, but regardless, this seems like a no brainer...

| | | I haven't had time lately to really reply, or even to dedicate a lot of time to the project, I have managed to open some time for this weekend so hopefully I will be able to do more research. The grass is really overgrown and with the door being broken I'm most certain no one lives there. I just didn't know much about satellites since I haven't ever had one at my house, so I didn't know if it was common to abandon them. Hopefully I will be able to rustle up some info on the house, with any luck I will be able to contact the owner.
