The opinion of a former Montrealer who now lives in Ottawa.

"I know nothing about Labonte so can't comment about that. But
for Expos, cities around the world are having them all the time. It
makes no difference if it "lives up" to Expo 67, etc. That would be
50+ years ago by then = most of the attendees will be six feet under.
So it will be a new Expo, a 21st century Expo, and a new generation
can enjoy it for whatever it would be. Plus in the case of
Montreal, the land to do it is readily available.

As an election issue, this is a non-starter = not a popular
issue with the G.D.P. What it will take is a hands on Mayor that
just decides he wants to do it. Since the Mayor in Montreal tends to
have almost dictatorial power, it really boils down to one man's
decision."

All good.

Yes, I agree. It is a shame that the old Expo site was allowed to be "eaten by the forest" as one person put it. That was the fate of a lot of Expos of the last century.

Take a look what China is doing for their Expo2010 in Shanghai. I can guarantee you that none of the structures that China is building are going to go to waste after. They all have planned uses for after their expo ends. Essentially what they are doing is overhauling and renovating a section of Shanghai, hold an Expo, and then occupy the structures for business and housing, and even take some down and reassemble them for uses at other locations. (Remember the USSR Pavilion. They wouldn't donate the structure to us because they had a planned use for it after Expo. The building still exists and in use in Moscow.)

I think China is creating the new benchmark on how Expo's are done in the 21st century.

Those two islands are prime real estate close to the core of the city and in my opinion are just going to waste. A race track and a Casino? pfft! Those islands should be developed and incorporated into the city.

As for what's left of the Expo67 pavilions? Maybe they can be reused for Expo2020. Maybe the U.S. could borrow back the Biosphere for six months? Maybe Jamaica could borrow back their's?
Just a thought.

Exactly what Vancouver is planning to do with their 2010 Olympics games installations . They are planning of using it after the end of olympics games. This way, it will not be a "ghost town" like many cities who hosted olympics games in the past

I'm not saying to get rid of the race track or the Casino. The F1 race could be postponed for one year, or, i know what Drapeau would of done. He would incorporate the F1 race as part of the exposition. The Casino would be just part of the night life at the Expo.

Even with the casino and the track those islands are jut underused and really should be developed as part of the city.

Yes swiftman007. That is the way these things should be done now.

Wow... there are so many things wrong with your post that I don't even know where to start.

Ah yeah, actually I know. You must not know much about Expo 67 and the philosophy behind it to say something silly like "let's incorporate the F1 race as part of the exhibition"...Cause, well, the whole core concept behind Expo 67, as imagined by Jean Drapeau himself, was to reinvent a world where there WOULD BE NO CARS and NO MOTOR VEHICLES AT ALL. That's why there were the Expo Express, Expo Ballade, Minirail, Monorail, Hoover Expo 67, the bateaux mouches and the pedicabs. :/

So I'm sorry but oh boy, would Drapeau would have given you a true blast on this idea!

But bottom line (and years later), Drapeau is also the one that decided to include the F1 circuit on those islands in the first place, you know...

And I know all about Shangai, I was involved in the committee that choose the design of one of the pavillions...

And the only reason these islands are underused is because Pierre Bourque, when he was mayor, GAVE THE ISLANDS to the province in exchange of a write off of the city's debt.

I merely was suggesting an option of what to do with the race track for one season. I also suggested closing it for those six months. Who knows? By 2020 F1 could be racing with electric cars. Personally i would hope that the internal combustion engine that runs on fossil fuels will be mostly obsolete by then. They are so "last century". heh.

"And I know all about Shangai, I was involved in the committee that choose the design of one of the pavillions..."

Cool! And you don't want an Expo here. Amazing!

"And the only reason these islands are underused is because Pierre Bourque, when he was mayor, GAVE THE ISLANDS to the province in exchange of a write off of the city's debt."

Well we need them back now. Does the Province have any plans for them?

Long term development of the islands should be incorporating them as part of the city. But with a 21st century mindset.

All this is nuts and bolts stuff that will have to be worked out by the people in power.

Anyway so far this idea is just in the "dream" stage, and Labonte at some point is going to have to produce more than just a neat idea. Like plans? Even if he were to get elected he would still have to convince the Provincial and Federal governments. If we even get it all together to make a bid there's no guarantee that we would even get it. From what i have been reading there seems to be a general wish by some North American city's to have another Expo. 2017 and 2020 in particular. Two biggies are Los Vegas and New York.

Really the whole reason i posted about it in the first place was to see what you guys thought about it.
Am i the only crazy one here? HA!

I'm crazy about Expo 67. I have a major collection of Expo stuff, I'm (still) working on a book on its heritage and impact on Montreal and my biggest regret is to not have been able to meet Drapeau over a coffee to discuss his Expo's memories and its heritage.

But I don't see how hosting a new Expo would do any good other than overly excite some dying baby boomers that will be all happy to go back nostalgia lane, supported by the old traditional media presenting split pictures of "then 67 / now"

Strategically speaking, hosting an exhibition in 2017 makes a lot more sense - 50th anniversary of Expo + 150th anniversary of Canadian Federation.

But bottom line, this is all another symptom that Montreal is totally inapt to reinvent itself. And that its got is politicians with no vision whatsoever so they need to go back 50 years to find interesting ideas.

What about closing St. Catherine Street and featuring an edgy and design urban infrastructure like they have in Glasgow for example? Blue and Purple lighting!

What about some public markets all over the place like the so many Gendarmenmarkt around Christmas in Berlin!

... and why not some amazing architectural projects such as the Sony Center in Berlin?! An entire street block with many buildings covered with a giant glass dome, with a system of "curtains" to control how much sun gets in to ensure the temperature is always fine. And this is so amazing that there are no doors! You can walk through the buildings or directly through some walking alleys and you get under the dome, which also change colour...

Montreal could do all that, which would bring long-lasting pride to all Montrealers. Oh and a good public transit system as well, yeah...

Montrealers don't want to have to fight their way into a crumbling and inefficient sybway system while the city welcomes 50 millions visitors (with the regular number of visitors, taking the subway at rush hour is a pain, I'm frighten just to think about hosting an exhibition with our current infrastructures...!). Montrealers will be proud of their city when they will feel they are part of it and that their politicians are listening to them.

For the moment, Montrealers feels like some guerilleros that are desperately and at every minute on the lookout for the evil cash cows that are those staff that endlessly gives parking tickets to all, they feel they are held hostage of all the transit workers that are always under some union pressure tactics that slows down the network, Montrealers that drives get the feeling they are driving to the streets of Bagdad thanks to all those potholes, Montrealers that try to bike feels like they are in survival mode to avoid crazy car drivers that thinks that they are kings / queens of the road, ... Oh and did that mention that the Transit bus rear mirrors killed like 3 people just this year?

Take care of these annoyances and pride will come back. And I'm afraid that switching the "back verts" for recycling plastic bags won't do it so really, I think Labonté sucks.

Ok then. What Canadian city do you think "deserves" to get an Expo? Considering Edmonton, Ottawa, and even Hamilton are seriously looking into it. Either for 2017 or 2020 i think the Federal Gov't is going to have to support one of these city's and there will be a bid placed with the BIE in a few years. And that's just the Cdn cities.

I still think, when considering the above choices, Montreal is the best host city in this country.

Ottawa would be the natural choice for 2017, for obvious historical reasons (150th anniversary of the canadian federation).

(quintet?)

l'article STM:

http://www.stm.inf...tm/2002/020806.pdf

So they are all gone.
