I was going to visit the area recently but had to abort due to time and vehicle problems. There are the foundations of several soda plants and some charcoal kilns on the west side of the lake. North of the lake is the site of Owenyo, the point where the narrow gauge Carson & Colorado rail line met the standard gauge SP line heading south. There are the foundations of the water tank and transfer trestle still there, and also traces of the right-of-way. On the east side there are some foundations of mills around Keeler, and also abandoned buildings scattered around the area. It seems like a worthwhile trip out.

Did you happen to get any pictures from your travels? Sounds like an interesting trip for sure.

Wow, that's a whole bunch more cool places to explore, and none of them are the same as what I heard about. Sounds like a great place for a trip.

There's apparently an abandoned monastery-like building, in the shape of a cross, built out of granite blocks in the side of a mountain. Just west of Lone Pine. It sounds almost to good to be true, but my informant can't be doubted. He was an older fellow that used to play there as a kid, I had an Easter picnic with him and his mom and they both talked about it. There are also several ghost towns, mostly in the mountains to the east, at least one of which you need to climb over a mountain to get to, there isn't a road in anymore. And an abandoned silver mine. And I was chatting with one fellow who said he used to hike through the tunnel that carries the LA aquaduct through the mountains, but that they have since sealed it off better. But the tunnel is still there, just harder to get into.

Don't really have any pictures. I'm not much of a camera person, my girlfriend brought along a camera and took a couple pictures, but they are mostly just of me and of plants, probably not particularly interesting to anyone else.

I haven't heard about that monastery before, but it definitely sounds like an awesome place. That ghost town without a road may be Beveridge, which has been mentioned before on this site. Apparently its quite a trek to reach it and you'd need a full day. Its located in the mountains west of Saline Valley, which is east of Owens Valley and part of Death Valley National Park. In Saline there is also the remains of a borax mill and a salt tram that travelled 13 miles over the mountains to a terminal at Keeler, both located near a small salt lake. The tram towers are still partially intact and the remains of salt operations can be found along the west side of the lake. Also nearby are some hot springs, although I'm not quite sure where in the valley they are. Supposedly its a favorite hangout for nudists.

Yep, the ghost town was called Beverage. And the mountain it was on too. The guy I talked to thought it was named after some person. He also said it was easier to try to get to it from the Saline Valley side instead of the Owens Lake side. I also heard about another ghost town to the north, that you could drive to, that didn't sound quite as cool but still interesting nonetheless.

There seems to be a lot of hotsprings in the area. I stayed at one called Dirty Socks for a night.

I LIVE here and I've never been to the Owens Valley. Congrats though, I've been wanting to go there for a while. I'm just afraid it'll be too damn cold. How was it?

Well I was there then gone. The free day I did have was hanging out with others on I-10 for about 4 hours. The girl friend thought we should take a short cut and got lost in Riverside. Like I said "Hi, I am lost." Got stuck with a Chevy HHR for a rent a car... hold on a sec. I just heard 2 gun shots outside. Any ways, I went by the Air museum out there and totally forgot about the housing across the street. Anyone been there at all. I know they got a fence. Looks sweet, but I was to pissed about driving for 4 hours from coming back just to looking at water for an hour.
Last time I was out there, we went to the museum. Damn near would have made my trip a little more worth it. Not that I didn't like seeing family and my niece getting married.

It hasn't happened yet...
