Here Nostra, I told you about Place Bonaventure which was supposed to become the tallest in Canada. The project was actually going to be built, but stupid legislations and big pressure from the promoters of Place Ville-Marie cancelled it:

Kresge's was a name as well known as Simpson's, Eaton's, Ogilvie's or Morgan's (lots of apostrophes in those days eh). Fantastic cafeteria in the basement which was a typical thing for "big" stores of the day until the end of the 60's. When they started building the underground city with all it s food courts at the same time as the Metro it started killing a lot of stuff off up on street level.

One of the most lamented losses on Saint Catherine street was the Chicken Coop which was located near Murray's on the south side along the theatre stretch lol. The Chicken Coop was simply the best BBQ Chicken place MOntreal ever knew- they even sold corn fritters which were amazing, though maybe not exactly cholesterol free. Went down in a fire and didn't return. Lots of speculation about that which is how people thought in those days.

Tons of restaurants like Chez Cosy that made pizza with the cheese melted over the top of all the other stuff. It was more colourful in the eating places that were available for sure. Montreal was food. Still is a lot of great restaurants here but you have to remember that back around 72 the fast food places and the food courts were beginning to take over......

Montreal was also theatres!!! If you'd walk on Ste. Catherine Street from University to Atwater, there was at least 4 or 5 theatres by street block! And those were beautiful, amazing theatres, many of them done by Briffa himself!

I find it quite ironic that we let all those amazing places disappear, yet today, we want to demolish more buildings to create... a theatre district. Montreal had one of the best theatre district in the first place.

i have to agree with you on that maze. and charlie remember how decarie was montreals miracle mile. Places like the stagecoach, piazza tomasso, ruby foos (when they were thier own restaurant) rib n reef, ponderosa and the chalet BBQ near jean talon. The spectacular neon of harrold cummings chev olds (where you do a great deal better) the incredible blue bonnets sign, the ruby foos neon, and who can forget the dripping juice of the orange julep sign.

im only 29 but when i remember some of the downtown sights that are gone now, les terraces, mc gill college when it was a street, simpsons (well the labelscar on the back where the S was removed) joes, curly joes, We must have had 6 howard johnsons between atwater and university, Sam the record man, the skinny hotel at dorcester and lucien lallier, the pascals store on bleury (always an adventure) russell books in the rogers and king building, the hulk of the queens hotel on peel (i was too young to explore it) the toy department at eatons with the huge model train display!

i could go on

Great pics. Some of you deserve an honorary degree from the City (unless you already hold a Bacc in historical city planning!).

Kudos and thanks for the great pics! Are there any others?
