read the link above, it seems that the library is to be demolished if that petition doesn't succeed , to make place for condos and so again a part of the Canadian history heritage will be destroyed...

what a perfect society we have ! (attempt at sarcasm here)

If you follow the link given above, it also mentions that there is a move afoot to change the name of Parc Avenue to Boulevard Robert Bourassa. I'm not sure what Parc Avenue was named for, but wanting to change the name is part of a pattern of historical revisionism that has been ongoing for more than 30 years now.

I remember when Dorchester Street was changed to Boulevard Rene Levesque; when Mountain Street was changed to de la Montagne--despite the fact that the street was named for Bishop Jacob Mountain. Griffintown is now officially designated as Faubourg des Recollets--the pattern goes on and on.

Since the 1960s, Montreal has been a developer's paradise--just bulldoze what you want, and build something over it. How many historical buildings have been demolished? (The Van Horne mansion is just one that comes to mind.) I know the provincial motto is "Je me souviens" but it appears that Montreal has a bad case of Alzheimers at least when it comes to certain historical groups and periods.

"You're a catastrophe... On your watch we've lost almost all of our allies, the budget surplus, four airliners, two trade centers, a piece of the Pentagon and the city of New Orleans. Maybe your just not lucky. I'm not saying you don't love this country. I'm just wondering how much worse it could be if you were on the other side. Yes, God does speak to you. And he's saying: Take a hint." B. Maher
