savannah tunnels

I've been hearing about these tunnels for years (lived here on and off since '02), but have never come across anyone that actually knows how to get into them. I found an entrance near forsyth, but after going down into it, realized it was only about 100 feet long. Anyone know a real way in? More to the point, anyone know a way in and want to meet up and do some exploring? I'm game for anything, but the tunnels are really what i'm into.

uh yeah dude.

I am down as the frowny clown anytime for tunneling, I've never gone but I've seen some pictures of a guy who posted of a 100yearold highdroelectric intake tunnel that runs to the niagra river and they're incredible.

i pretty much live downtown, and am free after 5 on weekdays and anytime on weekends.

even if we can't find an entrance, i've got some cool places to show you, and i've also been solo, it'd be nice to have company.

Andrea showed me a few of the possible entrances. I am sure she will chime up on that at some time. However from the part of the conversation I recall, not much of any tunnels are left. They were all down at river front.

Any of you up to finding a way into the power station on the river front, apparently its very closed.

one possible tunnel was in a restaurant with a pirate theme near downtown. they feature it inside the restaurant, but oddly they sealed it up without exploring it fully.

IF there are tunnels surely they're totally fucked due to the age of them.

I hate all of you

That is gone. The whole hill that sits up on eroded and was rebuilt. Any tunnels that were in Savannah have been sealed. There is an entrance that many people know about, when you go down it there is a little room, and a wall where there was once some kind of tunnel. There has never been any solid proof that tunnels actually existed, I think the closest to being well documented is the one DjM is talking about, and even that is more of a tale no one can really prove true or untrue.

there are so many stories about them, theres gotta be something. ive got some friends who grew up here and told me about tunnels that run all under forsyth. supposedly their was an entrance someplace in the park, but it's been sealed. there has to be something else though. yesterday a friend mentioned a crypt in the abercorn cemetery that has a tunnel in it, but that sounds way too 'goonies' to be true. also, breaking into crypts is a little much for me i think.

Yeah, like I said there is one actual tunnel entrance that is sealed and it is very close to the park. However, I there are no existing entrances or accessible tunnels currently in Savannah. If by Abercorn cemetery you mean Colonial, I don't think there are any tunnels there. Some of those tombs maybe have steps down a bit, but that is about it.

are there rules heres against discussing...ummm...'bypassing' a sealed tunnel entrance? cause while i'm not really into breaking into a crypt (that sits between a fire station and a police station) i'm not totally against spending some time to take out a small brick wall if it's feasible. for instance, the short bit of tunnel you can easily access near the park... if there was something to be broken through down there, that would allow for further exploration...i've got $5 on a sledge hammer. i'm also down to actually do some sort of 'research' on this (although i really don't know where i'd begin).

what else is around here that's really worth checking out? anything that hasn't been explored yet?

i'm sure they've both been explored through and through, but fort jackson and richard b. arnold (highschool) are very awesome, also... while scouting yesterday i found an old planet3 (in case you don't know, that's a peircing/head shop) that is completely open off of whitaker.

off of victory there is a burger king, and out on tybee there is a building (not sure what exactly it is) across the street from the court. there's also some sort of huge warehouse down by the postoffice and probation office off of fahm st.,

i'm down to go anywhere, lemme know.

im originally from detroit, so i've been through more abandoned warehouses and houses than i can count. i'm still into stuff like that, but i was really hoping for something a little 'grander'. the power station on river street sounds interesting, although it also sounds like it could potentially be a bit of a logistical/legal pain in the ass. riverfront property plus power station sounds like it would have customs/anti terrorism written all over it. i'm down to check it out though. i'm not giving up the dream of these tunnels either. there has to be a way in, and i've gotta break something to find it, so be it.

andrea, what do you know about the short tunnel by forsyth? what was it used for? did it connect to something else? it ends out near the street, but it must have either gone back underneath the hospital, or branched off to a side or something.

thisisour,
my work schedule kind of sucks for stuff like this...basically i can only do tuesdays and wednesdays. also, i'll be out of town from the 7th through the 16th. but i guess on the bright side, it'll give us a chance to plan things to death.

Have you guys checked out the local historical landmarks. Not to much UE but they are nice.

I still think there are more factories and the like to the south. I found a old building near the port that was actually a old factory, unfortunately its now a storage facility.

a) You are correct, and in Savannah they are tight asses about that stuff. Use caution. This would also be a good reason to not get caught opening tunnels up in high traffic areas of the city

b) I know mostly about its location and not much about what it was used for. I have heard rumors, but they sound a little iffy.

there's also the longstanding fear that if you open it up, you'd unleash the yellow fever on the city. i weighed this one out though, and decided that there is no way in hell that everything i've done in my life was just in preparation to unleash a 200 year old plague on america. i have really bad luck, but it's 'getbit by a spider' bad luck, not 'die from a cursed mummy' bad luck.

Don't get your hopes up kids, the "entrance" near the hospital isn't an entrance at all, but a former underground morgue for the hospital. There are drains under the park if that's what you're into, but Savannah is a contemporary city with current underground infrastructure so if there were tunnels, they would have probably been closed and/or destroyed by now.

And stay out of the power station and anything else that involves using a sledge hammer to get into. Don't ruin it for the rest of us.
