| | | Structures from a quicksilver mine < on 9/19/2006 10:08 PM >
| | | I took these several weeks ago at the New Almaden Quicksilver mines in the South Bay. The hike up here was brutally steep (naturally, I discovered a much easier bike trail for my descent)There are some cool mining tailings along a different section of trail that I didn't take, but I hope to see them next time. this barn appeared to have housed vehicles at some point
inside on the workbench
Watch out for dangerous wildlife!
obligatory macro... check.
not sure what this was,
This looked cool on the outside but was gutted by vandals
a miners cabin, far to rotted to enter
Cheers! HaudAccess

I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread. |

| | | I live just 2 minutes from the Almaden Mines, and only 1 minute from the Paking area. Ask me anytime, and I'm there. I love mines like no tomorrow. The last I was up there, I was training for a hiking trip, so I packed all my gear into my hiking pack (tent, bag, pad, food, clothes, etc) and went up. If it wasn't for some stupid work thing I had that evening - and rules of the park - I could have stayed up there overnight. I wonder if they have permits for that... -Ryan

| | | Not that I know of, but I'd love to get back up in the hills and mines again. So if anyone wants to start a meet for the area, then why not! BTW, Congrats Bonedoll on your Full Member Stats! Anyhow, Ya. I start a new job that will take up most of my time during the week and weekends, so if we want to do this, lets plan it now. PM me and I'll help coordinate this thing. I'll cc with HaudAccess if he wants in on it. -Ryan

| | | This is what started it all for me, I grew up in New Almaden and explored this area extensively back in the late 70's and early 80's. Back then there were still vehicles in that barn/shed you mentioned, as well as gas pumps and much inside of all the small homes (like dishes, clothing, beds and bedding, and even many utensils and such). The main furnace/refinery was still standing -I used to climb all over it!!! -probably quite dangerous. It's now been semi-demolished. There was also an office, ...maybe an assay office is what it was, that was present, but now gone. There are many access points to the underground tunnels, but all that I know and knew of have been either sealed or purposely caved in. There were even several tall concrete supports (they look like giant monoliths) that were surrounding many of the mine shafts ..they probably held cable material, etc to pull ore out of the shafts. Anyways, these large monoliths have all been torn down as well. This is a vast area w/ many remnants in about a 9 mile radius.. w/ the epicenter being the furnace/refinery area. Today it is a park, and access to all the structures is extremely easy. ...back in the day we used to hide out from park rangers (we spotted several). ...the entire area within about 1/2 mile all around the refinery was closed off w/ no tresspassing signs back in the late 70's to about the late 90's. I am telling you, this was a great place in the late 70's!! It was still in pristine shape back then. I even remember playing inside the old cars and trucks that were up there. Lot's of fun times. I spent many many many long days exploring this area all through my youth. Over the years this area has suffored a lot of vandalism both by vandals and by the city. The city of San Jose originally began demomlishing everythign in site in fear of some lawsuit (someone getting hurt up there). ..then quickly realized that it was a part of their heritage and stopped the destruction. ..now its a park, complete w/ a museum in the small town of New Almaden. (actually the museum has been around for a long time). If I remember correctly the New Almaden mines were owned by the same company that owned the area of New Idria and the Black Diamond mines. The mines were open in the 1800's and closed in about the 1940's then purchased and re-opened in the 1960's and closed again sometime in about 1972-76. I began exploring the area in about 1979 and stopped in about 1985. -with just several visits over the past 20 years. This lead to my passion for UE'ing and Ghost Town visiting.
