| | | | A Explorers Guide to Threats < on 8/3/2006 1:02 AM >
| | | An Explorers Guide to Threats I have started a collection of information that will be useful to all of us. It is a compilation of possible threats you may encounter while exploring and how to properly handle them including technique and first aid. The guide is a work in progress but when finished will include tips and information on things like asbestos, poison ivy, animal & insect bites, first aid for fall victims and large lacerations, air quality & toxins in drains and other places, heat exhaustion, hypothermia, etc… Things it wouldn’t hurt to know should the occasion ever come up. Please check it out and feel free to make comments and suggestion. http://www.urbanat...owthread.php?t=404 Just a warning... there are graphic images in this guide. bites, cuts, breaks, etc.. | | | i suppose it might be going a little far, but information on what to do in case of running into hostile transients could be useful. the reason i bring this up is because blacksheep and i were just in new orleans at the falstaff brewery where we encountered handmade signs that threatened violence to other trespassers. it's really a no-brainer to just walk away, but a reality to explain for explorers who may not be as experienced.

| | | Thats a whole different topic better dealt with in private forums ;) I like to keep anything that details trespassing or any kind of law breaking away from public areas. [last edit 8/3/2006 1:24 AM by SpookyDan - edited 1 times]

| | | I love it! Keep up the good work! *puts a star sticker next to the "A+" on your guide's title page* My mother got bit by a spider that might have been the brown recluse when she was a kid, it pretty much tore up her whole leg and she has permanent damage where she limps and it looks deformed. At age 51 she's still suffering from the bite. Terrible.

| | | Good stuff, keep it up. Consider adding the designation of N100 to the correct type of mask/respirator to combat asbestos.

| | | I initially read the title of this thread quickly and thought it said "An Explorers Guide to Treats." I should write the companion piece following said title. And don't forget to leave out the "turkey vulture" section, as they seem to be a common sighting when exploring.
Get down, girl, go 'head, get down. |

| | | N, I took a recluse bite on the right side of my face in 1989. I knew what it was, and I went to the hospital immediately. Even then, I have a small scar on my cheek that looks like an acne scar. No way to completely heal from those without cosmetic surgery. Dan, I'm liking this. Way to go.
I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread. |

Common sence is not really the base of this knowledge. Common sence would be "common" things: such as knowing not to touch a substance you are unaware of, not touching a hot pan, etc. Just because not everyone knows all poisonous spider species, or the details of toxic chemicals does NOT fall under common sence. Thanks Dan for the information for some of those who are not aware of the dangers that await us inside and outside a site. Explorers who don't know should ask and be educated.
