Abandoned powerplant Deltona 7/22/06

I just visited the supposed abandoned power plant in Deltona. Let me clear things up on the condition of this site. It is not abandoned and is in fact in use by Progress Energy. The junction station out front is as live as ever. The old building in the back seems to be mostly unused however there is a brand new building next to it which was occupied by employees of progress energy when I drove by. The front gate is covered by several survelliance cameras and secured by an automated keypad entry.

Needless to say I did not stick around longer than necessary to snap a few quick photos. There is also a building across the street which also had employees present. I was only there for about two minutes which was long enough for the employees across the road to take notice of me and come outside to investigate. Since that building has no windows I assume they saw me on the cameras.

The fence line around the structure seemed completely intact but I cant say about the back along the water line since I was unable to observe it. The road out front is very busy at all times of the day and it is impossible to stop without attracting notice. The east side of the property is hedged by brush which would cover an approach from the side but then you must cross a large open space where you are sure to be seen. Also the only nearby inconspicious parking is 3/4 mile away at a boat ramp. The shoreline between the ramp and the plant is nearly impassable since for a distance it is rimmed by the road and further along by numerous private properties and fence lines. I guess you could enter at night but then you would not get very good photos.

The ideal approach would be from the water in a canoe which you could hide in the reeds. Unless you always carry a canoe this is obviousily out of the question. I would rate the risk of entering this place as HIGH. The employees seemed alert for entry attempts and there may also be a risk of electrocution in some areas. The old building looks like its connected to the grid in several places.

By the way it is located on DeBray dr. in Deltona. You take I-4 exit 108 and its right on the north shore of lake Monroe. I see no point in concealing its location. I wasted half an hour on terraserver looking for it.

It's easily accessible at night. Just go through the woods and there's a huge hole in the fence at the shoreline.

Yes I am sure its easier at night but I was hoping to get some good daylight photos. I thought there might be a breach in the fence on that side but I didnt get a good look. Also where on earth did you park? I think everyone should be very careful entering anywhere owned by Progress Energy. That company is known to prosecute trespassers. Since 911 power station operators have become paranoid. They eat up that terror threat crap like its candy.

When I was there at SEXFest, it seemed pretty dead. The relay station across the street is active, but as for the plant itself, the inside seemed pretty unused. As far as I could tell, the power generating facilities of the place weren't in use, but I don't know shit about power, so I could be wrong.

The building itself was wide open, which may mean that people go in and out of there regularly. This is all speculation, I honestly have no idea what the real story is behind that place.

If you do get any good pictures, I'd love to see them.

Sometimes, you need to march right in and demand your rights, even if you don't know what your rights are, or who it is you're talking to. Then, on your way out, slam the door.

I just got back from here tonight and thought I'd update this warning.

I too only got quick photos of the outside, activity was incredibly high, even at midnight!

Traffic on the road out front was averaging 40 cars a minute, and even my 2 minute stop out front seemed to attract some attention.

Best place to park would probably be the church down the street.

They can't be TOO concerned because there are gapping holes all over the fence, including one wide enough to simply stroll through in the front gate. Also, considering the recent UE going on in there they haven't done much to lock it down. There were no police cars either.

I don't know what parts are active, obviously the plant isn't in use, but the whole place buzzes enough to make me concerned about bumping into something live.

Additionally, Progress Energy isn't the friendliest company around, anyone who has ever been late on a payment knows this. They are extremely paranoid, I've driven up to one of their fully active plants and within 1/2 mile of the gate the guard was out ready for attack.

Tonight I also noticed more company vehicles that previously, and a light on in the house next to the plant, which I thought was unoccupied.

As much as I want to go in this place I have very mixed emotions about it, it certainly ranks on HIGH.

P.S. It is in Enterprise.

Modified: It's hard to spell this late.
