| | | | So why isn't train hopping on this site? < on 7/22/2006 8:33 AM >
| | | Honestly, I'd understand if this website was just about abandoned buildings but its not at all. So my question is- why isn't train hopping on here? It seems like a perfect fit if you sum this site up as urban exploration. It'd also be awesome to be able to get train times/routes on this site.

| | | Probably because it's difficult to database and log trainhopping the way you can with abandoned structures - a gallery of your photos of one train is going to look eerily similar to others as well

| | | Probably because its dangerous as hell. Urban exploring is relatively safe, as long as your smart. Talk to anyone who has worked the railroad for any length of time, and they'll tell you all about how often folks get maimed and killed trying to fuck with trains.

| | | I've done a fair amount of train hopping and like anything a little education and a lot of awareness can significantly reduce the dangers. 9-11 seems to have made it much more dificult from a law enforecemnt standpoint. Also theres the Foamers ( Railfans who get way to excited about there hobby) who will call the law if they see you. They think they have a vested interest in the railroads. An easy one in California is the Santa Cruz branch. It runs Mon. Wed. Fri. Get on in Watsonville around 9:00am, and head up the coast towards Santa Cruz. It stops at the big cement plant 15 miles north of S.C. You have to get off here while they switch cars at the plant for an hour or 2. When there done hop back on and its takes you back to Watsonville. A way cool ride that takes 8-10 hours.
