High Desert

So my boyfriend and I went up to the High Desert today for my grandmother's birthday. Unfortunately, there was major parking lot traffic on the main fwy. My father pointed us towards the 138 exit, which ended due to construction, then we had to take the 2 (which goes through Wrightwood) around into some national forest, then hop back onto the 138, to the 18, back to the 138, and then onto the 395. Took us about three hours.

Anyways, every so often along the route there was an abandoned building or two. I talked him into pulling off on the side of the 18 and letting me explore this wrecked house. Tires everywhere, graffiti in bright neons, chairs, couches, seats from cars, random trash, several jackrabbits, lots of crows, and two owls (one dead , one wounded). Since I always carry a camera on me, I took as many pictures as I could in the five minutes we were there (it was almost 110 degrees and there wasn't a lot of shade).

But, in seeing all these houses and whatnot along the way, I thought it could be fun to go up there a little later in the year and just explore the back highways and town limits, see what we can see.

Comments?

There is alot of stuff out there.

What are they doing to 138? I've seen the signs that said it was closed.

*****************************************************************************

Somewha t amusing story;

I was at the missile base wandering about, hungover as usual. I came to the phone building and walked right in as I have a hundred times before.....

Well, this time there was an owl in there.

It was pissed.

I walked through the small door on the south side of the building into the fury of what some people call an owl. (I prefer flying vengeful cat bird thing, but whatever. Tell me god wasn't high on some shit when the owl was made.)

Suddenly I am alone in a room with a giant beast of a bird beating the crap out of itself against the ceiling. It's legs were fully extended, and it was delivering massive amounts of bird poo to the floor.

I have my 20d hanging off my neck but I'm too scared to raise it. This fucking bird is going to kill me.

Well, I stood there in the doorway for about 45 seconds watching this glorious display of feathers and poop. This monster had it out for me. I knew that if I moved I would be done for.

My tormenter decided that it didn't want to take my life this day, and picked the other door. Thank fucking christ.

I ran around the building to yell at my friend to look at the flying beast. He thought I went nuts. We both tried to get pictures of this demon of the skys but we had too short lenses on.

Ohh well, that's my owl story. I'll post pics of the room if anyone is curious.

They're widening lanes and adding truck ones at that.
This is part of larger project widening the entire 15 through the Cajon(es) Pass.
HWY138/HWY2 will probably be finished before the said 15 construction.
The 15 construction was reported to be completed by next year or a little beyond that.
So, if you're planning a little frolic to Vegas, find an alternate route.
Because the 15 through the pass will be a chokehold.
And I didn't know there were any decommissioned missile bases out here.
Please tell me where, I'm getting tired of riding my bicycle through the ever-present tract-burbs.

Ohh sweet. No more getting stuck behind trucks on 138.

I read something about the 15 being completely closed several times coming up soon. That is going to make traffic suck everywhere.

The missile base is kind of a decieving name, it's actually some kind of rocket motor test facility. I posted some pictures on here http://www.westcoa.../viewforum.php?f=7

Yeah, the 15 was crawling. The signs said something about the Oak Hill exit, but they didn't say what was happening. As for the 138, the road is actually gone. You can see where it was, but it's like they just tore it out of the ground. You have to wait in line for an escort (locals only) to get on the dirt 138.

This particular owl was too damaged to do anything. And since the other one was dead but uneaten, I can only assume a bunch of asshole kids came up, found a nest, and decided to have some fun. Matt, do you need to confess to an act of revenge? ;)

Poor owl.

I have killed two animals in my life.

I dropped a rock on a lizzard when I was like 9 or 10 and he got cut open pretty bad. It was a small rock as I was just trying to scare him out from under the stairs. I feel bad about that to this day.

The second was a cat that a friend of mine hit in the car. It's rear section was no longer working. I had to curb check it.

Mormon Rock?

I wanted to catch the injured owl and take it to the local animal rescue but I was not sure if the High Desert actually has one, we didn't have anything to contain it, it's a fucking owl (big talons!!), and my boyfriend was charitable enough to turn the car around to take us back to the house a few miles after we had passed it (it took some convincing). Besides, last time I managed to convince him to take in an animal until we could find it a home, the female (cat) menstrated all over his downstairs bathroom.

Curb check?
