Here's my current setup:
Motion Tablet PC running Streets 2006 connected to a DeLorme Earthmate.
Gets a fix under bridges, subway tracks, etc (of which there are tons in NYC, btw), and the 12" screen is the shiznit.
(Ignore the poor mounting job - I've since improved it.)
Next up is a deck that has a line in so I can run MP3s from the tablet to the stereo speakers.
Oh, and did I mention the Tablet audibly tells me when to make my turns?
(You can pick up these older P3M tablets now for ~500, the GPS for about 60... way cheaper than a Streetpilot or Roadmate, and more useful... not to mention easier to take with you to detract from a thief!)

Thats actually exactly what we plan on doing.. once I get my GPS me and my buddy are going to ride into union station then go on each track to the end of the line and back then meet back at union station between train hops and see what we can come up with.. I figure it'll kill a day at the least..

| | | | I have a Lowrance Ifinder (the cheap one) and I like it. Some people will tell you its crap, but ti works well enough for geocaching (finding tiny ass jars and containers on the woods). just get that one, its like $70.

| | | | I can't really speak for Lowrance, but I also have the Garmin eTrex Summit and I love it. Regarding whether it's worth the extra $ for the compass, yes, it is. And it's more than just an expensive compass holder. What the mag (electronic) compass does for the GPS is give me the ability to hold a bearing/direction while standing still, and when temporarily losing satellite lock. Stop walking with a cheaper GPS receiver and it'll just play dumb until you move again. Sure, the compass comes in handy for navigation as a standalone tool when you can't get a GPS signal, but that's not the main reason I like having it. The key is its integration with the GPS receiver processor. Units with magnetic compasses also typically have altimeters, which can come in handy. I've had my Summit since 2002 and it's performed flawlessly for hours on end. The only thing I miss is mapping, so my next purchase will probably be a Vista C. I just bought my girlfriend a Magellan Explorist 500, which is a sweet little unit with all the goodies. Another thing to consider for UE is Garmin's Rino line, which have FRS radios and NOAA weather receivers built in. You can set them up as a beacon, so someone else with a Rino can lock on your location. Handy if you get into trouble. When I got my girlfriend's Magellan, I did a lot of shopping around, and found very good prices at compuplus.com. For $140 you can get mapping, but not the compass/altimeter.
