Here's a few shots of the roundhouse's interior (and one of a set of exterior doors), taken in 2004. The building carries a national historic site designation, but it has been caught in a kind of limbo, as it is still used for train storage and maintenance. It is also a very valuable piece of property, which puts it in jeopardy, should it be sold by RailAmerica, or CN, or whoever owns it now.

The rolling stock of the E & N was gradually sold off or transferred out over the years. Baldwin diesels came in 1949. Steam locomotives were transferred to mainland operations. The Budd Cars which are currently in use as passenger trains were brought into service in 1955.

There was only ever one tunnel on the E&N rail line, in the Malahat section of the line.

The property is still owned by Canadian Pacific and attempts are being made to turn the structure into a museum.

Here is a link to the most concise history of the roundhouse that I've been able to find

Interesting. It might be an access hatch to get to a gear room of some sort. Either way someone should investigate it...

Sump? Perhaps they had sumps to catch drainage and oils, as well as keeping the turntable pit dry.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too!

Wait...I forget what the initial lead came from, that there is somehow tunnels connected to the old turn table and its not just an old building that is out of commission (as far as trains are concerned)

It's being used for something, the lights are always on and there are people working in and around there all the time.

Only a wild guess, but the air compressor to power the turntable may be under those boards.

BTW here's an old shot from inside the roundhouse. (From the good old days when CPR used it AND DIDN'T LOCK THE DOOR)

One building is still used for train service and storage and another is used by a furniture restoration company.

I'd recommend a Sunday Afternoon. Least likely time to encounter staff at the roundhouse. (It's kinda hard to maintain the Buddcars when they are up Island being used.)

Um...what's a Buddcar? Do they have anything to do with Budds?

Cool dog. My dad says he used to work at this railway back in the day. He said he never has found any thing that would suggest much of underground workings.

Nice pictures, nice BUDD cars.

Most of VIA's BUDD cars from the eastern half of the country ended up being sold to Cuba. Nice to see one again.

It all kind of went down hill from there.
