Ninja? Or frightened little boy?

| | | So! A few short weeks after discovering the world of UE, I have completed my own first expedition. There is a bike path in East Providence, Rhode Island, that runs along the bay. The bike path, like many bike paths, runs parallel to train tracks (much of New England has become engaged in the Rails to Trails program). Upon my many rides there, I noticed a fence, and could not contain my curiosity. I gathered a few like-minded friends and off we went.
Before long, we found an excellent hole in the fence that opened onto a steep slope.
We came across this dirt path. This is my three friends, ready to set off on an ADVENTURE!
We found this dirt pit, as well as many tire tracks leading into and out of it. Hm... perhaps not so abandoned.
Things started getting cool. We found this rusty ol' fuel tank. That thing behind it is a well of some sort...
...as this picture reveals.
This may have been the terminal. A bit disappointing but still cool.
"Non-Hazardous Waste" from Chevron.
The bay has some pretty heavy shipping, more so in the past than today.
The refineries across the bay.
The coastline.
Very overgrown.
We stumbled across this incredible mural. Apparently a memorial to a girl from the area who had died in a car crash some years back. Very moving.
No, it didn't work.
This is the other side of the wall on which that mural was painted. Incredible graffiti, if you're into that sort of thing. Apparently a pretty active area, since most of this looked more than a few months old.
Good thing we're not taxis.
Turns out the front gate was wide open. Ah well, it was fun going in our way. All in all, a very successful expedition for my first real time out. It's a cool place, and I'd definitely like to return someday. Finally, I just want to thank everyone on this board for being so friendly, helpful, and receptive. I've always felt a certain yearning for places like these, but until I discovered the UE community, I don't think I ever would have actually explored any of them. I mean, that's someone else's property, man! I sound like my parents showing off their vacation pictures. Anyways, enjoy.

| | | Ain't she just? Was in the area again the other day and gave it a quick look-around... already some new graffiti (not the good kind). It's really quite impressive how quickly these places change, and a little depressing too. What would it have been like if we had made it there a week earlier?

| | | I thought that spot was a fuel terminal. Its the Providence Worcester Railroad that crosses the site, and I thought it was used for shipping fuels through the Blackstone Valley. There's the tanks laying around, the open fields with meters in them, the fact that they demolished it, and there's even a few spots with large tanks in the ground. Also, along the East Providence bike path (near Squantum Woods), there's a few more spots that never had structures in them, but are surrounded by the same 30foot high hurricane barriers. They're giant empty fields full of dead grass, which also made me think petrol or natural gas. Then, there's all the Mobil tanks up the street. Did you see the little hut thats still standing? Its got a sunflower painted on the door, and I think somebody lives there. The graffiti there is amazing, too. There are a few spots, like in front of the giant caution sign, that have padlocked underground bunkers. While 95% of the above ground structures are demolished, there might be an underground tunnel/tank system still there (if it actually was a gas terminal), that no one's explored yet. You guys gotta stop sayin that, she won't let me take pictures of her anymore! I kind of gathered that it was a fuel terminal, on the old P&W RR. Mostly I was just impressed by the amount of cool stuff that was generally less than 50ft away from a busy street. But that's what UE is all about, right? I saw one of those bunkers you mentioned, Ian. (I think) There was one hatch welded shut, and another locked and barred... I was looking more closely, but my friends, who are worrywarts, shooed me away. Once I hone my 1337 70ckp1ck1n6 sk1llZ, I'll check it out again.

| | | Sorry to interject with an off-topic post but maps.google is ripping us off. The photo of the same area can be seen here link but isn't nearly as magnified. It is clearly the same satellite picture - same time of year, same angle of shadows, and same white car on the highway just to the left and below the train car. Why is maps.google so lame? Why does TerraServer USA who get their pictures from the same source not cover Canada? We (Canada) want the same yummy magnification detail.

I have bolt cutters. Finesse isn't really my thing. I'm on a crusade to document every abandonment in the Blackstone Valley National Heritage Corridor, and I completely forgot about the EP Terminal. I haven't been there since last winter/spring. There's some neat stuff along the tracks once you get closer to the bridge, too. And even if you only check them out once, the fields are kinda neat.

| | | PM me for any details if you're interested... the most interesting we found was this graf (which as you can see was really incredible) but I'm sure there's plenty more, and I'm definitely planning a return expedition.

I'm pretty sure you're right, I think that was a fuel terminal. I was there once a couple years ago, and I came across those bunkers. I'd definitely be interested in going back to look for a way in.

The sattelite photos are from 2002. I've poked around there a little bit in 1999/2000, and then a whole bunch more in 2004. I've never seen any train cars on the tracks.
