So... I was putzing around Northern Electric and the redeveloped Redpath today, just checking this and that out, when I noticed the weirdest thing. On two blocks of Richmond, between Grand Trunk and Wellington, every single fucking house has a leading '0' in its street address. I mean all of them.

Here's a Google Maps link in case you're not familiar with the neighbourhood. You'll need to copy & paste to make it work.

http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=45.482574,-73.559293&spn=0.006860,0.013189&t=h&hl=en

What do you suppose is up with that? I asked a couple of locals about it, and all I could get out of them was a "that's just the way it is" and a shrug of the shoulders.

It's great to be alive!

I guess that's because they developed those two blocks after the rest of the street, after the initial layout plan.

but this is montreal, many streets have had thier adresses re numbered. look at marlowe in NDG all the houses have stained glass adress numbers, the street was re numbered 2 years after the houses were built, so the stained glass numbers are wrong

I agree, I live on Prud'Homme street In NDG, and we have the same type of thing that happened on Marlow... our stain glass reads 6XX but out actually address now is 35XX

The political boundaries change over time leading to address changes like the ones in the stained glass. The leading zero's has me curious too.
Another oddity to think about is this---- New York City doesn't exist. The proper term is The City of New York.

My own old address was quite odd as it was a rural one, on my drivers licence et cetera I had to have the exact location of my property. With no street name and house number it was sometimes interesting to fill out forms requiring address. In the late 90's the address plan changed with everyone in that area getting rural "fire" numbers. Now the address looks more normal and agreeable to computerized address forms.

The XXXXX denotes name of the I lived in township. The actual village I lived near didn't appear anywhere in the address.

W1/2 LT25 C6 XXXXX TP

What does it mean?
W1/2 = west half
LT25 = Lot 25
C6 = Concession 6
xx TP = XXXXX Township

Bad translation follows....
___________________________________________

_ W1/2 LT25 C6 XXXXX TP
_ ce qui signifier ?
_ W1/2 = ouest moitié
LT25 = sort 25
C6 = concession 6
xx tp = XXXXX banlieue

Wow Mutt,

this is quite an explanation.

I just think when cities merges to create the current city of Montreal, some addresses changed. And they went from a 5 numbers address to a shorter one to people just put "0" to cover the former first number of the original address. That happened to me when I lived on Christophe-Colomb. We went from 10850 to 9998 and we covered the 1 with a 0 on our door...

also as of now there are multiple streets in the current montreal, victoria being the worst culprit, a lot of people dont realize that some of the stores in the eaton centre have mailing adresses on a victoria street that disapeared 40 years ago
