| | | one of my favorite places ever is in the process of being demolished and i go back everyday or so to check on its progess, as each day about 5% more of it is gone. i noticed as i entered the building the sound of water falling from the roof, as if it was raining, upon further inspection i noticed the deconstruction crew had several hundred feet of sprinkler hose along the facility, and brought up to various parts of the roof, soaking a good portion of the interior. anyone know what they would do such a thing?

| | | they usually spray them as they tear them down to keep dust low...usually using a firehose. Perhaps that is what the purpose is.

| | | KC is right, they use it to keep the dust and small parts of debris from going all over the place, water makes things heavier and denser so they wont be flying around.

| | | Also the ocaisionally use water to test the bulidings structual strength, soaking something in water will show weaknesses in it ie: the bulding. such as to give them a better idea of how structually sound the bulding is and what kind of demo they need to do.

didnt know they did that, may explain what robdobi saw a bit better. as it seems they were doing more than just wetting it down to keep dust low

| | | It might help prevent fire as well, steel wrecking ball / claw smashing into metal and concrete can mean sparks, and a dry building could be dangerous. But yeah, keeping dust down would seem to be the most logical reason.

| | | Rob funny you made a thread about this, I was dropping off something for my work in waterbury and I hit traffic.. turns out they were tearing down a building and the reason everyone was going slow was the firehouse they were using to spray water on the building was acting like a speed bump. I got to agree with everyone else, when I saw them spraying the building I thought it was to keep the dust down too.

| | | I don't know whether this is actually one of the reasons why they would soak a building, but I suppose it would also help in pulling the building down - because the water would make the wood weaker and increase the weight on load-bearing walls etc. Maybe...? *shrugs*
