| | | Tried to find some historical info on this defunct tunnel (particularly why it was closed down) but I was coming up dry; I figure even if I did find some info on it, it would probably give away the location though.. Anyway, really dark and not too much to see, so pics are slim, but it was still a super fun excursion! 1

| | | When was the tunnel last used? Many in California were shut down during WW2 because of the possibility of a Japanese invasion.
Just celebrated the birth of my third girl, an exploration all in its self. |

The weird thing about this one is it seems to have been built as a pair with another tunnel being right next to it which is still in operation. None of the other tunnels on this line have a second twin tunnel next to them though so it's kinda weird :?

| | | I don't know anything about the history of the tunnel but I visited the location quite a while back. I ended up sticking my camera under the door to take photos as I didn't have any feasible way of getting in so props for getting in there.

I tried to get in this one with pga once, and failed utterly. He went back a second time and said it's a helluva climb. Ugh, I really want to see that Girafa from the inside.

Thanks man, yeah, definitely one of the most physically demanding spots I've been to as far as getting in and out -- I doubt I'd ever try this one again haha, I literally almost got stuck inside!

| | | I used to work on the hill directly above this location. I had heard from a longtime resident that though they both run parallel, the closed tunnel housed a second set of tracks that diverged just outside of the tunnel to proceed down the berm and westward. Not sure when it closed or why, but I suspect that it wasn't needed when this spur line was abandoned and it became a bitch to maintain/secure from "homeless" and "vandals." Another possibility is that it's unsafe/unstable, but I kind of doubt that with the very active tunnel right beside it. This hill has been blown up and dug to bits and there was once another railroad tunnel that ran through it before a fire and partial collapse.

| | | That's right. The line originally split just south of this location. The tracks that ran through this tunnel turned westward north of here, ran through another tunnel that was demolished 30 years ago and to an industrial area where they connected with the original main line. Great job making it in and out! I scouted this one but my cautiousness won out.
