Well... My story..

I just recently left my life in the music biz. I have toured the country in bands and have worked with some of the biggest names in the biz. But one day I found photography and fell in love. But more so, with photography I do not have to count on others for anything anymore. Spending many hours in the studio waiting for others to arrive, all the bullshit that goes with music, yada yada.. Just got sick of it I guess.

But have been into exploring most of my life, but not really entering buildings until about a year ago. Now I am obsessed. So now my next journey in life begins........

I might be cool, but I'm far from a fan.

I saw an ad for a free movie playing at the student union in Madison, Wi. It documented the explorations of a bunch of MSP folks. While jumping up and down for joy in my chair I noticed a girl in front of me who shared my enthusiasm. I tapped her on the shoulder and made arrangements to explore. She ended up being a totally awesome person, and unwittingly hardcore. After getting to know my hometown pretty well I gravitated towards the bigger cities in the midwest, and have met great people and had some really incredible adventures.

living in houston meant lack of choices in outdoor hobbies. mountain bike trails are shoddy to mediocre and not in mountains (though i still keep up w/ mtbing.) adventurous kayaking, rock climbing outside, hiking? pretty much non-existent. so i guess somehow i started looking at these abandoned places like an outdoor challenge. climb a few fences, walk in da heat w/ a sense of mission, it works.

Pretty much just grew up with parents who were very into abandoned mines and ghost towns. That love eventually grew on me. From there got into doing any sort of building that's abandoned, although I consider ghost towns and mines to still be my main thing.

I remember, I was about 10, during an 8 hour drive to my grand parents place, I started noticing all these old and abandoned houses along the roads and I was facinated, I wanted to see what the inside looked like lol. I was 14 when I got in my first abandoned house, it was great and I came back many times, sneeking in all the stuff that was left there, it got demolished a year later. But I needed more of these abandoned buildings! My dad work for the Montréal city, he got the keys of many condemned houses/duplex/triplex and appartments buildings, i've spent many hours with him in those buildings. Most of them were full of junk left over from the ancients residents. As they were intended to be demolished, we were allowed to take whatever we wanted, it was great! I'm now 19, I got a car, a good camera and sadly, a loaded schedule. I haven't been very active lately but i'm just waiting for a good occasion to get back at it!

Ghost towns and old mines ROCK! Lots of cool history and scary places to explore.

It started, for me, almost a year ago to this day. A couple of friends and I decided to bike down to the river to explore the abandoned ferry dock and we ended up walking down the beach. At the end of the day, my shoes were muddy to the point where they were unwearable, but for some reason, it was the most fun I'd had in a while. A few days later, we decided to go to some "No Trespassing" area my friend's sister had been before with some abandoned farm machines on it. Although they weren't really too special, the thrill of being there exploring was a rush in itself. From that point on, we began exploring houses in our community and then, things just went forward from there. Definitely the best pastime it's possible for someone to get into in life.

I wouldn't say it was in me from birth but it's one my oldest recurring dreams that I can remember - exploring tunnels.

Even in primary/junior school I'd planned to build a "tunnel world" type theme park with my friend Paul Beraldo.

Started exploring abandoned buildings as a kid about 9 or 10. The feeling you'd get as a kid was an unbelievable rush.

When I couldn't find many friends to explore with I started a group with the one friend that would (and his brother) but they eventually grew up

The group has had more than a thousand members through it & I enjoy meeting as many keen explorers as possible.

I've always had it inside me and I CAN NOT not do it.

I'm obsessed.

Interesting stories, everyone, especially the one about stashing the prostitute bodies ;)
I myself became interested when I was about 13 or 15. As a teen, public transportation was my way to school and home, so there was a burned down building in front of the bus stop (Fulton St., next to the Pentecostal church by Roosevelt Elementary fo all ma H-town folk from the time) that I had to look at every morning and afternoon stepping out of that bus. One day I finally had the curiosity to go inside and look at what it was, it didn't even occur to me that it was illegal. Surely enough, I was innocent and naïve, all I did was open the door without the normal paranoia and caution about being seen that we all go through today. Needless to say, it is because I traveled around on bus and was on foot as well that I would stumble across abandoned buildings, and the rabbit hole kept getting deeper as the years followed.

I grew up playing in abandoned buildings for lack of anything else to do(small town). Didn't start bringing my camera along until about 2 years ago when I got into a more serious relationship with exploring.

Great thread topic!

I have been into exploring since reading my first Trixie Belden mystery (still have most of them!) Those books were actually written in the 50s but were all about "abandonments". I was maybe 8?
When I was 9 my nana died and I wandered around the mortuary by myself so sad and forlorn. No one caught me and I got a real "behind the scenes shock" when I got into the prep room and saw dead people on the sink/tables.
At 12yo my friends and I would hang out at a big abandoned water tower and got into abandoned movie theaters in SF.
I got inside the Castle Lanes bowling alley by myself when it had shut down. That place held so many memories for me and my parents as well who had gone to high school events there. I had met Minnesota Fats there and he had given us autographs and money for the jukebox.
So the bowling alley was a real connection for me cuz I had actually hung out there.
I had explored Westlake bowl and Japantown bowl as well. Both times with friends that just didn't "feel it".
So UE has always been a part of my life in a way.

Same with Clyde. He and his brother used to ride inflatable rafts in the San Leandro creek/spillway all the way out to the delta/bay when they were kids.
They would also kneel on skateboards and scoot thru drains and tunnels and had lots of abandoned schools and assorted other places to "get in" to.

Of course way back then neither of us knew we were "Urban Exploring".

The question is not when are we gonna stop, It's who's gonna stop us?

Flash back to 2007. My interest in exploring started with a rumor that went around about a fallout shelter and tunnels under my high school. This seemed plausible since it was an old school and was built during the cold war. One day, just after the school year ended, my brother and I walked into the school and found one of the hatches that were located in the storage closets connected to many of the classrooms on the older half of the school. The school was mostly empty besides some teachers going doing whatever they do after schools out. We moved a large bookshelf and file cabinet off the hatch and made our way down. We soon came upon a wall with a bunch of names with old dates written on it, probably from past students. We added ours and headed out. I remember the incredible feeling of actually seeing this place that people had only heard rumors of, but never actually attempted to find. I really wish i would have spent more time down there and found out how extensive it was. Maybe, I'll have to make a return trip some day and see if my name is still on the wall.

After that, we just messed around in old barns and a 1950s animal hospital (that was actually pretty cool) that we used to drink beer in and bring friends there to scare the shit out them. I didn't come upon the community until about a year ago.

Shitty picture of my high school's tunnels:

2 things:

- Government's low budget putting construction sites on hold.
- Pripyat, my country of birth (Estonia) was one of the unfortunate countries who had the visit from the accident's cloud.

Longer version:

As a kid we used to get into construction sites which were on hold and play hide and seek etc. Few even climbed the huge cranes. (Parents were told we were at so and so's place).
Ever since i was always curious and fascinated by abandoned places, only a few years back is when i found out that theres other people out there who enjoy same stuff and that there is even a uniting title for this hobby/lifestyle.

Also my biggest fascination has been Pripyat, something about that unfortunate history torn place that called out to me... maybe because we received the radiation cloud when accident happen ? Not sure. But its hard to explain this bond i have.

So heres my story.
Btw hi5 to the hooker story ;) hahaha

I saw urbanX a few years ago, thought his stuff was cool and have always loved looking at abandoned stuff from the 80s or older, then discovered this site (very recently) and decided to just go balls deep into it, i now have my first explore done and will be going on more once my life settles a bit
on that note is urbanX a member here? I've always wanted to tell him thank you for the pictures and introducing me to exploration, i'll probably just email him though

Apparently that DID just happen. And I AM proud of it
