| | Winter is here- time to get prepared! < on 11/29/2012 3:51 AM >
| | | Greetings, My first post, how exciting! I'm not here to introduce myself, but I would like to mention that I'm a 20 year old, university student that has just recently been quite infatuated with urban exploration. To be honest, it's a new obsession that is scratching my adventurous itch that has, for far too long, been suppressed. I'm a film student that knows his way around a dslr. Hint hint. Now, getting to the purpose of the post: it snowed this evening. After witnessing a poor girl slip out on her bicycle this evening, i've realized that I need to fucking prepare for the turn of season. This goes further than installing an aluminum rim and cyclocross tyre on the steed. What are the essentials for winter exploration? Please, if you would be so kind, could you provide me with some important things I should invest it? Such as, what kind of footwear do I need? What kind of batteries work better in cold temperatures? Any suggestions for warm utility gloves? Equipment aside, could you provide me with tips to make my winter exploration safer and more comfortable? Excited to be on the forum! Thanks for the read!

| | | Welcome here ! Just a tips : a second pair of socks is always usefull ! (walking on the snow to go on a covered spot, welded snow on your feet, change your socks and now check the place as a dry-feet explorer) Bye

| | | I personally recommend ridiculously warm winter boots. My feet are the first thing to freeze in the winter. I feel like I should post a picture of my crazy mittens... got them living on a Cree reservation, and they basically free up your hands and double as a purse/carry all.... The native use of them probably wasn't to carry a flashlight, camera, and spare socks, but I've adapted them ;)

| | | Batteries (camera/etc) tends to "drain" in low temperature. As soon as you warm them up, they go back to their previous charge level. Something to keep in mind Also, wear multiple layers of clothes. Temperature inside buildings will often be warmer than the outside temp. (also, welcome to UER!)

| | | If you keep your extra pair of socks and / or mits inside your sweater (on your belly) .. they will keep nicely warm when will be the time to get rid of the wet ones ! If you keep extra batteries in your pockets they will also be warm . As said previously, Hot paws , feet and hand warmers had been very helpful ! A small thermos with a hot drink is a luxury pleasure ! For the rest,well.. do not hold biners in your mouth while installing your rope ! ahahahh !

| | | Thanks for all the tips, people! I've added a pair of long johns and a thermos to my shopping list! Post script, I would actually really like to see a picture of those mits!
