| | | Posted by OryonsOracle While observing this video I noticed this drain the explorers were in overflowed even though it was not raining. http://www.youtube...atch?v=wpbU-A9sEvI Go to 1:45 to see what I am talking about. Ive walked miles of drains and never had a problem. But I dont want a problem either. I dont go when it rains. Other than rain what else could happen to cause it to fill with water suddenly? |

Also, has anyone said a rolled over petrol tanker? That's one I wouldn't like much... a rolled over petrol tanker... yeah, a rolled over petrol tanker. Provided that it was full and the petrol poured out.

| | | Posted by DJ Craig Also, if the drain is ridiculously oversized for the amount of water that it seems to carry, that may be a warning sign.

This could be something to watch out for, but it's not always a problem. From an engineering standpoint, you always want to pad your specifications. That is to say, if you're laying that pipe, you want to create a much higher volume space than you actually think you need in a worst-case scenario. This is because you never want to have to lay that pipe again. As a (bad) example, Indianapolis showed a distinct lack of this foresight when constructing their drain system, and in recent history has had their system overflow and flood the streets on a regular basis. The engineers thought they planned for the worst-case scenarios but other factors can have unforeseeable changes over time, making those worst-cases worse and worse. Over the past few years, they've been having to spend the ridiculous money to recreate an almost entirely new system, and I can bet you they are padding their specs this time. The good news for you folks still in Indiana (I just moved away) is that you might have some cool new large drains to explore in Indianapolis now.

Well, thanks for posting that video. Glad you made it out in time. Im happy to hear where that particular flood of water came from. And from someone who was actually there. I was really wondering how that happened.

| | | I've heard some horror stories about the reactor cooling setups at WPI and UMass Lowell. Some old mill towns in the northeast with extensive canal systems have tie-ins in weird places (im thinking holyoke) that wont be your friend if theyre draining/filling canals or doing turbine work. maybe someone takes a big piss and the sewer overage goes into the drains (like in the dirty burg). Lots of fun reasons!

| | | I've read about some waste water treatment plants dumping processed water, usually chlorinated and warm into streams that may also happen to be underground drains. Also, heavy industries typically have their own treatment plants on-site, especially if they use water a lot and keep flushing it.

| | | I know a couple friends who had stopped in a drain and sat in the dark talking. Out of no where, they hear a loud bang from within the drain. They feel a wall of air rush past them and then the water quickly started to rise. Apparently, an ice plug to a side pipe dislodged, giving them quite the terrifying thrill.

| | | In general in high populated areas they have automatic systems that can relaese water to clean the drain before it starts raining. Also there could be a fire that could be the cause for flooding.
