Monet's Mansion

On my day off yesterday, I went to go check out a site that I was pretty sure had been closed up tight. HOWEVER, as I pulled up and did a walk-by, there were construction workers sandblasting the interior of this warehouse. Naturally, I just decided to simply walk right in the side door and stumbled upon some of the best graffiti I've seen in my life.

I'm typically a hater of graffiti because it tends to ruin many beautiful, abandoned sites; but in this case, it was absolutely gorgeous. At that point, I became quite worried that the workers were actually sandblasting the walls, but I wasn't going to stick around to find out. I gave myself a 20 minute time limit as I was playing Dodge, Dip, Duck, Dive, and Dodge with the workers.

All are great, but once again the 3d effect in #9 is my favorite. You're right. The quality of the graffiti is a step up from the usual.

In my limited experience artwork such as 3, 4, and 13 are likely chemically influenced.

Stunning artwork and beautifully photographed! I am in the same boat, I don't usually like graffiti but this is different. Glad you were able to capture it before it is all sandblasted away.

Great documentation. It's sad that so much of this stuff, the very stuff that makes obvious, compelling, iron-clad argument for graffiti as art... is being destroyed, yet there is so much of the crass shit everywhere defacing places with hideousness.

This site was trashed with terrible tagging about 3-5 years ago - I was caught by police here because the guy who called it in thought I was another punk tagger. I see that it has now been reclaimed by actual artists. This stuff is brilliant. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks tunnelbug and everyone else for the kind words!

I wish I had more time in this place, I think I only managed to capture half of it (mainly due to the dodging of construction workers.) I'd say about 95% of all the paint in there was high quality work. Honestly, better than anywhere else I've seen in the Bay Area. Again, I'm concerned that this crew was sandblasting *everything* but I can't be sure.

On top of that, if they had not been working, I didn't see any other viable POE except for a mysterious hole in the ground/ladder combo that looked to lead underneath the building. However, when I was inside, I didn't see any way up from under the floor.

I'll check it out again soon to see what the status is.

whoa! such improvement in the art at this spot. haven't been in in a long time, but those photos make it look like it's worth going back to.

So they are finally doing something with this place? Thus the construction? or is it getting prepped from demolishing?

Thanks, madcap! I've gotta give credit where credit is due: to the artists who created these masterpieces. I just took photos of 'em.

Great photos! The level of detail is just breathtaking, I like 3, 4, 6, 13, 14 the most. There's a lot of love and talent on those walls. Makes you appreciate the fact that these artist didn't do it for the fame, recognition, but for the love of art. Kinda sad that the majority of these paintings will never get seen, and perhaps even sandblasted away =[

These are really amazing. Hard to believe it represents just 20 minutes worth of setup. Thanks for sharing!

I am trying to figure out what #8 is doing visually. To me it looks flatter than the others and I'm not sure why. Perhaps the black shadows on the left and the white highlights on the right are tricking how my mind processes depth.

If so, that's awesome. It was actually one of the few that was a multi-exposure blend instead of an HDR. Maybe that has something to do with it.

Cheer up, guys. This is this:

http://www.uer.ca/...=1&threadid=104470

http://www.endless...ecialdelivery2012/

Which explains:

1) How Siper got in when it was locked-up-tight prior...

2) Why the graffiti took a quantum leap in quality, and...

3) What the workers were doing, which is clearing walls of the crappy stuff to not detract from the good stuff going in (like not stick out partway behind a good one). And putting in lighting.

So are we all going Saturday night?

Well its good to know they aren't sandblasting all of the artwork! I saw this video previously and had a sneaking suspicion that they were one in the same. I don't know if I'll be able to make there but, if someone does, let us know how it goes!

Confirmed, just drove by it on our
way back from our project. Front entrance is double in-line padlocked (single chain, two padlocks, one inside, the other outside; unlocking either would open the doors.) People inside are visibly tagging on the 2nd floor. I also saw free-standing glass panels for graffiti use.

Looks like its going to be an awesome show!
