PSW Meetup/Convention Discussion Thread

A thread for anyone in the community to use to discuss anything related to planning a meetup or multi-day excursion.

edit: some of us were trying to talk about a AI/ALC combo weekend, before we were interrupted, so lets get that back on track. If you have nothing to contribute to this topic then please go away.

edit 2: had to go back and find my link to repost pricing and tour options

ALC would be fun at night on a full moon. Fog would be a spoiler depending on the time of year. I've looked into the full moon thing before, tickets sell out extremely fast and unfortunately the full moon isn't conveniently ever on a weekend. Carefully planning and a little help from mother nature are a must.

AI would be fun as a camping trip, summer camping spots sell out 12 months in advance on weekends, you have to lug all your gear on the ferry and bring every bit of your food and water with you. Carefull planning and an attentive to detail host are imperative to pull off a camping trip. It's hard enough with 3 people and with 10 or more it would be a logistical challenge to say the least.

It may be easiest just to show up with a small group and do your own thing.

Have done the night ALC tour before. Some areas, such as the exercise yard, are closed to the public after a certain time of the evening because of lighting conditions and liability.

So, try to keep that in mind when planning this.

I waited every night for a week at the Beet Scales, no one showed? Curious...

I won't touch camping. Someone else can take charge on that if they wish. Without revealing too many details, I'd like to ask that anyone with a connection to either island or have done tours before, please PM me...maybe we can work together on getting this going a little bit more.

Angel Island campgrounds open up once school is back in. I camped there alone in January of last year. I intended to do some light painting, but just couldn't bring myself to wander around alone at night (admittedly chicken.) the buildings are technically off limits after sundown, but it being the off season, I didn't see or hear a Ranger once the sun went down. I think if we went out in small groups after dark (depending on group size) those of us that wanted to get some night shots would be able to. Weekends are currently open in October....could make for a nice overnight. It's something i have been meaning to go back and do with a small group of people. I specifically would like to camp on site 4,5 & 6, as it's on top of a bunker and not too far away from the ferry landing. The best part about AI to me was after the last ferry left for the day and there was pretty much no one there, but I still have a few hours of daylight to explore. Same thing with getting up at sunrise. Just my 2¢

Architecture, nature, alcohol....

Camping map is a bit outdated, but here: http://www.parks.c...lIslandCamping.pdf

Site 5 would be awesome.

When we were there, there was a group camping inside the large building down by the water at Camp Reynolds. I got inside and took a few pictures. They're in the thread from last year.

How do all you NORCAL locals feel about starting a bi-monthly (once every two months) meetup like some of the other regions do?

We can have rotating hosts, and a different meeting place (or the same).

I'd say it'll help to keep us all in touch with each other without the keyboards and computers. We can eat, drink and discuss anything we want.

I have a lot more ideas that we can build off doing something like this...

I would also vote to keeping the first couple of these meets to strictly FM's as to keep it semi-private

just some thoughts...love to hear some input.

Glad we are on the same page! We have actually been in the works of building something exactly like this. We have sent out a letter to a bunch of people that seem likely candidates and have had quite a bit of interest. Madcap tried to send it to you as well, but you still have him blocked. We were waiting to work out the details before posting a public invitation for hosts. So far we have a Halloween costumed explore planed (check the event section soon) as well as a few other events in the works for the following months.

Here is the letter Madcap sent out, if anyone is interested in being a host, let us know!:

Hello fellow 'splorers! Alice and I were talking and thought it might be time to rally the troupes. We are interested in helping this area connect & grow together and are certain some of you are too.

After many requests we are finally trying to put together a regular bay area meet up. This would be something casual every 2-3 months. These meets could be as casual as social meet ups to exchange stories, network & discuss future explores. This will serve as a community strengthening & trust building activity. While an event star would be nice, that is not the intent. Depending on how many people show up we can then decide to break up into groups, explore as a group, or just call it a day if there are too many people. We are hoping 4 or more people will volunteer to host an event. Aside from picking the restaurant and getting reservations, each person (or pair is sometimes easier) would be responsible for hosting an explore with whomever desires to go after the public portion. (Again, we don't always have to explore if the group gets too big) All hosts will be responsible for scouting, insuring the POEs & will be requested to attend at least 3 of these 6 events. We recommend that we only host places already in the DB or places that have very little risk of exposure to avoid unnecessary danger to the places we visit. We would like to use successful past meets as examples to model after; Cowboy's Niles Canyon meet, Decrepitude's Ord meet are prime examples (those being the only local meet ups we have attended). If you are interested in volunteering to host please PM us.

We are pretty excited and confident that we can make this happen and that we can have a lot of fun.

Looking forward to your responses.

Alice & madcap

Word of advice, you have just opened yourself to state and Federal conspiracy charges by saying what you did in a public forum. Maybe no one cares, but what was just said could guarantee about 5 years in prison, if not more, for people caught and the prosecutor was being a dick...

Feds have MANDATORY sentencing guidelines...

It is open to interpretation by the prosecutor, not by the defendant. I am not trying to be a dick, I am trying to say be careful of what is said on a public forum that IS frequented by LEOs.

Okay... Plain english...

Basically, you say let's trespass and do not show, if another is in agreement with you and trespasses, you are guilty of conspiracy.

When you say or do something, the crime is what is dictated by law enforcement and it is their job to arrest you. The prosecutor actually files the charges based on the written testimony of the arresting officer. No matter what your intent, if you say or do something that is against the law, you can be arrested and confined until you either make bail, are found innocent or disposition of charges resulting in either fines or imprisonment.

What you have to remember is that a law enforcement officer (LEO) is required to arrest you in the event of ANY felony (conspiracy).

As stated in California Penal Code 182 PC, a criminal conspiracy takes place when one

1. agrees with one or more other people to commit a crime, and

2. one of them commits an overt act in furtherance of that agreement.

Any member of the conspiracy may commit the overt act...which doesn't need to be criminal in and of itself. But does need to be performed before the commission of the agreed upon offense.

Examples

Some examples of conspiracies and overt acts include agreeing to

1. set fire to someone's car and buying the matches to light the fire,

2. burglarize a home and calling ahead to see if the occupant has left, or

3. kidnap a local judge before he/she sentences your friend and illegally obtaining his home address in order to capture him.

I know these extreme examples, but planning to commit a crime with another, even if the crime itself is a misdemeanor, is a felony charge of conspiracy.

A lot of words that had nothing to do with that I said

After reading and re-reading my post, I can only assume that what you meant is my mere mention of the phrase "POE," which doesn't imply illegal activity. After your previous "Meet me at the Beet Scales" CHP invitation.... why am I not surprised at his negativity?

For those of you who need clarification, by "insuring POE" I meant arranging point of entry with the owner/caretaker, scheduling a tour, making reservations, or simply insuring hours of operation. As I said, these meets are casual events to get to know each other and share. Not a time to feel threatened by narcs. Thank you for your suggestions, but I am more interested in the topic of meeting other explorers in our area. Of course we are only talking about legal activities here, insinuating otherwise is not constructive.

Why I am I not surprised at your stupidity? YOU HAVE NO SAY IN WHETHER YOU GET ARRESTED OR NOT, NOR IN THE CHARGES. People who thought they were WAY smarter than you have served time in prison for your EXACT offense. No matter WHAT YOU MEAN, the officer or prosecutor has the authority to arrest you on the BELIEF you have committed a crime.

You, by the nature of your post, have committed conspiracy under the law if ANYONE follows thru with said plan and names you. NO MATTER WHAT YOU MEAN. I am not trying to be negative, I am trying to help people to be aware of what they say on a public forum that IS FREQUENTED by law enforcement officers.

Why do you have to be so obtuse?

The law states:

every conspiracy has at least two elements: (1) an agreement (2) between two or more persons. Members of the conspiracy are also liable for the foreseeable crimes of their fellows committed in furtherance of the common plot. Moreover, statements by one conspirator are admissible evidence against all. Conspiracies are considered continuing offenses for purposes of the statute of limitations and venue. They are also considered separate offenses for purposes of sentencing and of challenges under the Constitution’s ex post facto and double jeopardy clauses.

Notwithstanding the two-party requirement, no co-conspirator need have been tried or even identified, as long as the government produces evidence from which the conspiracy might be inferred. Even the acquittal of a co-conspirator is no defense. In fact, a person may conspire for the commission of a crime by a third person though he himself is legally incapable of committing the underlying offense. On the other hand, two people may not always be enough. The so-called Wharton’s Rule placed a limitation on conspiracy prosecutions when the number of conspirators equaled the number of individuals necessary for the commission of the underlying offense. In other words, one person may commit a conspiracy.

How could I get arrested for arranging a legal meet up with local hobbyists? We are "conspiring" to go to Alcatraz and take a tour, so what?

Resorting to personal insults instead of having an actual conversation... again. Sigh. I asked you to clarify and all you did was copy and paste a bunch of unrelated laws. They would be valid had we actually suggested anything illegal. What you are saying is that no one can ever plan a simple meet and greet. What is this thread for?

No, I said be careful in a public forum and you started the PSW forum "I am holier than thou" shit again. I can see why people talk about you and your explore group as so "exclusive.' It's because of the fact that you are a clique whore and still think your shit don't stink. I am done with you. None of what I said was immaterial. None of the laws were unrelated, they are VERY related to our "hobby" as you put it.

You want to play games, I suggest you look up the past reports of people from this forum being arrested for their "hobby." You are an idiot if you truly believe your words could not get you arrested. Look at the people at Gitmo, it is ALL WORD OF MOUTH.

What an idiot, go back to your secure world where nothing ever happens to you, princess, because you are always right...

EDIT: BTW, if someone gets caught breaking into a building and they name you as the person who sent them that way, you can be arrested. Does that answer your question about legality? Don't be stupid, think before you post.
