Mad Hatting

So one day while taking a random leisurely drive through the back roads of Sonoma County my girlfriend and I stumbled across this place. We did not have our cameras or even appropriate clothing to do a proper explore so I stored it I the memory banks and vowed to go back someday with cameras and closed toe shoes. Then I totally forgot about it. Months passed an one day I was surfing the interwebs and stumbled across a pic of it and it all came flooding back.
Turns out the old rusted out building was part of a mercury mining operation that has long since moved been shutdown.

When I took this a bat took major offense and scared the crap out of me!

Very cool find. I've never seen this location. This is my old stomping ground, good old SoCo. There is another mercury mine in this same county, its quite large though....hmmm.

There was another facity further north(?) along the road and on the other side of the valley, I wanted to check it out but it was way to hot to go tromping thought the wilderness and down a steep valley. It looks larger but the tube things were laid/fallen down. I plan on returning.

We have to scout it out first and then I'll let you know what the scoop is. The last time I was there was about 15 yrs ago but the place is badass. I may have to shmooze some property owners to get access. I'll keep ya posted.

Looks like we took over this poor chaps thread (sorry, I'll keep you posted as well).

Is that mine nearby this old mine truck?

If not, I know where there's another one.

It might be as there are many old vehicles on the side of the road in the area. I couldn't say for sure though.

Edit: Sorry I wasn't sure if you were talking to OP or me.

no worries, I looked into your tip, and I think I found what you were hinting at, looks awesome, I can't wait to get out there and see what there is to see. Naturally there will be proper documentation of the excursion!

So last week I took some interested friends from one of my jobs out here and we did not arrive till well after dark. It has a whole different atmosphere when illuminated by dim and flickering flashlights! Sadly it was a spur of the moment explore so I did not have my camera to capture all the epicenes.

While we were there a car stopped and started poking around our vehicle. I went to make sure our stuff was safe and got into a rather tense conversation with them. Once I was sure they were not trying to rob us and they were sure we were not there to steal, do drugs or roil in the heat of debauchery, they explained that the elder of the two had actually poured the foundation for the facility. He says it was built in 1962(ish) and was almost immediately closed down "because people are scared of a thermometer". He was visibly bitter.

We went our separate ways and we continued to explore for another hour or so looking at all the little details.

All in all it was a very cool trip.

I'm puzzled: the 5th & 6th photos seem to show new wood construction...
Could you tell if mercury was extracted from cinnabar on the premises?

I do not know enough about the process of Mercury mining to tell you for sure, but I do know that the facility was only ran ore for a few month before shutdown (early 60s) and no new construction happened since then, according to the man who came and made sure we were not deviants.
