| | Walking on a tar roof < on 3/5/2012 3:54 AM >
| | | There's an abandoned malting company where I live that's practically impossible to get into. There are ladders and stairs leading to the roof (where the open doors are), but I'm not sure if it's trustworthy seeing as it's a tar roof. The roof itself seems to be in pretty good shape and the building has been abandoned since 2002 or 2003. I'm wondering if you guys have any advice when it comes to this type of roof in a building that's been abandoned for 8-9 years. Any advice would be great. I tried searching for anything like this in the forums and came up with nothing, so I hope this hasn't been asked before.

| | | Go during daylight, not at night. At dawn if you must. Follow the beams, or stay close to the perimeter. If it seems unsound, get off it! Floors, roofs give way with little or no warning, and if they go, you're going too.
Your security measures were inadequate. How unfortunate for you. |

I always always do that unless it causes me to be seen. Theaters have some of the sketchiest roofs, usually if i have to get in that way ill stay along the edge where its the strongest. Usually i know im safe if i walk there.

or fall. Never get so sneaky that you forget what the greater danger is.

| | | Remember most roofs are built to be walked on, the ones that aren't usually have signs. A building abandoned 10 years ago probably hasn't degraded to the point of a collapsing roof yet. But obviously use common sense.

| | | Thanks for the advice guys! I talked to someone who entered through a door by walking across the roof and he said it was fine, but I'll take your advice about watching my step and staying close to the edge. Thanks again!

| | | Look for wet areas. If there are big puddles, grassy sections or really soft spots chances are it might be rotten. If the rot reaches wooden beams or wooden supports then it will fall apart. If it is a metal beam roof then just make sure there are no rusted out spots and that roof integrity is ok i.e. the whole roof won't collapse or your foot won't fall through

| | | Also be aware that the roof may be spongy. That's just the way a lot of tar roofs are. So keep that in mind when your testing your footing, its going to be harder to tell what is rot and what is spongy roofing material.

| | | Really the only way to see what the roof integrity is like is to see the whole picture including what's under it. If the building is in good repair, no broken windows, etc. and the roof looks good, it probably is. Once you have a floor or roof collapse under you though, you will learn to use caution. When they go, they collapse *gone* just like that. Not a fun ride, and you better run fast as the devil if you can.

| | | Thanks for all your advice and tips guys, I really appreciate it! I'm going back to the place tomorrow and I have to cross the roof to reach an entrance. Hopefully I'll be back to tell you how it went.

| | | I just had an experience with a tar roof, we were worried at first however we discovered that it was concrete underneath. So knowing what your dealing with helps.

| | | Definitely good advice. I made it up onto the roof, which turned out to be similar to the one you described, with tar over concrete. There were areas that weren't concrete and were covered in mold and extremely sketchy. We climbed all over the roof though without a problem and wouldn't have made it into the building otherwise.

| | | I was on a roof that was abandoned in the 70s and it was similar. It felt more like walking on plywood then anything else though. It's had to deal with Maryland weather - 85-90 degree heat in the summer and temperatures in the winter dropping to sometimes 17 degrees. Also, a recent hurricane.

| | | Posted by Rosin No substitute to using your head and going slow. Feel it out, is all you can do. If you do fall, get as wide as you can fast as you can to spread your weight out and hopefully catch a beam. I've put a foot through before and got lucky. Good luck.

out of context this sounds really dirty. haha.
