Umm yeah. Blanket as a burglary tool. I can see a lot of stuff, but this is a hard one to sell.

Climbing over a fence is trespassing. Not burglary.

Blah Blah Blah. Shut up and open the damn door.

Blanket or bolt cutters. One could be considered a burglary tool. Not both.

Also speed is often very necessary when trying to avoid being seen. Sometimes you don't have time to spend balanced on top of a fence trying not to rip your pants. Much easier to use a blanket and climb it quickly, especially helpful in groups.

Again, bolt cutters yes. Blanket? no. Going over a fence is trespassing, not burglary. Unless you use the blanket to cut a padlock, or pick a lock to gain entry to a structure. That is burglary.

Continue thread about barb wire now.

It could be in an area with a recent rash of blanket thefts, you'd be a prime suspect.

Ya, I wouldn't want to take that kind of a chance.

Ha wasn't clear enough. I agree with you. Blankets are for sleeping and picnics and fences, not burglary.

Intent is a lot of what the law is about.
I doubt once you breach a fence you're just going to frolic in the grass.
Don't get too clever for your own good, avoid bringing junk you don't need.

Speed isn't the same as stealth.

As for quick entry, go predawn with a plan. Scaling a fence takes a few second with no nothing. Get real.

Your security measures were inadequate.
How unfortunate for you.

"junk" that increases the likelihood of success isnt "junk"
And if possession of a blanket on the wrong side of a fence makes you seem a thief, then does a blanket on an airplane make you a hijacker?

no shit.

But when you have a short window of opportunity in an open/visible area, speed is necessary. Scaling a sharp fence with backpacks full of gear and/or cameras, etc. is not always a quick thing. As if predawn solves everything.

I definitely would lean away from carrying a blanket or carpet. It's just not necessary. MOST barbed wire fences are way easier than you would think. It just takes a little practice. And the rare barbed wire fence that is extremely difficult to climb over, it isn't necessarily even going to be any easier with a carpet or blanket.

In response to everyone who is saying predawn, unless you want to take pictures during the day, and who knows? You could be, really depends on the location, I guess. But my personal recommendation is to take a weekend off, fuck up your sleep schedule, and perform the entry between 1:30 and 2 AM, then go onsite, noodle around for a few hours, then hit the road by a safe 5 AM, though at the absolute max, if it's an active site, (like my personal favorites of cranes usually are,) then you should get out by no later than 6 AM. Plenty of time to screw around and do what you want. Though if it's an abandoned site, and if you're indoors or underground, I don't think it really matters, just stay for a while. Hell, I took a nap in an abandoned cabin once (possible auxiliary blanket use?) But still, remember the formula: Active Site = In By 2:30 AM, Out By 5:30 AM. I really don't reccomend staying later than that, you still need time to get out. Especially if you really take your time getting back over that fence, though most of the time they're easier to get back out of. Barb wire keeps things out, not necessarily in.

Everything happens for a reason. It's just up to you to figure out that reason. So go ahead. Search for the reason. Now you know it's there.

Best lighting for photos is sunrise & sunset (+/- 1-2 hrs respectively). Also a lot of areas have laws that state that trespassing after dark is considered criminal trespassing, so it means the difference between a fine and getting arrested for trespassing with criminal intent.

That said, I've found that your formula works well when photography isn't a factor and you just want to explore for the sake of exploring.

Breaching a fence is considered trespassing in many states no matter what the time.
The use of deadly force is more likely after dark so stay away from houses.
