| | | Drain experts please look here! < on 2/23/2012 1:37 AM >
| | | I have never been in a drain YET, and I don't know much about them. I have been trying to search google to find out more info on what this is and how it works, but not knowing what I'm looking at I'm running into dead ends. Can some of you experienced/smart people tell me about this drain if you can tell me anything about it at all. The main thing I was wondering is can this lid be opened manually or is it something that is controlled somewhere else? I won't be planning on trying to get into this drain due to it being pretty small, but I found another one that is larger with the same lid. It will open, when there is enough flow. No remotes involved, just the flow and weight of the water. You should also check out the Rookie forum: http://www.uer.ca/...p?fid=1&catid=1089

| | | It's manual. Just tug on it hard enough and it'll open.

| | | Before you go in, check and see how good it seals up around the edges, and try to find the other end of it, if there is one. If it's got a decent seal around it, and especially if both ends are capped, be VERY careful about the air quality in there, even more so if it has standing water in it. If you smell anything, leave. Also, I'd prop it open when you go in, just in case you can lift it open from the outside but it's too heavy to push open from inside.

Very good advice! Thanks for all the help. I'm hoping when it warms up and dries out to check out some of the ones I know have been explored already just to get a feel for it, but I found these on google maps and checked them out just to see what they were about.

| | | Depending on where it is, I wouldnt prop it open so much that it cause's suspition. Anyone who walk's past and see's a 3 foot stick holding the cover open is going to give it a second look.

| | | I've come across these before. Typically they're controlled by a central computer to control the flow of stormwater discharge. I wouldn't mess with it. And your post might qualify as asking for entrance details. Watch out.

| | | that's where the poop comes from. You get 5 guys and a chain to pull it open and you jam a rock up there by the hing. Then hope no one takes the rock out while you're inside... otherwise you're screwed :p
But... yea, sewer overflow is likely. What happens is this is an overflow tunnel. It's a tunnel that's connected to the main interceptor sewer, but in a way that there's no flow to it in normal conditions. But if too much stuff is coming into the sewer, it's either engaged through a floodgate by a computer, or more likely sewer flow backs up a shaft and begins to fill this thing. If it gets high enough pressure it'll push against the hinged plate and start to spill out into the river. They add the gate to keep people out of a traditional outfall and to keep the backing up sewage to a minimum, only if the whole system is going to rupture will it release raw sewage into the river. The EPA fines municipalities millions of dollars every time they have unprocessed human waste into the bodies of water, so they avoid it at all costs. The likelihood of anything really neat being in the pipe isn't that high, but you could come upon some fun automation stuff or a dropshaft to an interceptor, which is always fun. But the likelihood of getting sealed inside isn't worth it IMO to go in from the outfall, and even if you do get it open you've gotta wedge something in it to keep it open. It's easier to get inside those than to get out... done both before.
edit: sorry for all of this message. My grammar right now is horrendous, and I don't think I could fix it right now. :p [last edit 2/23/2012 5:00 AM by shotgun mario - edited 1 times]

Get off the internet! Don't try to have a UER e-penis! You won't impress anyone! This especially means you, Minneapolis MN newbies! |

No, it's probably not. Look at it. See any hydraulic pistons? Any electric motors driving cogs to open it? If what you say is true, why would they put them on the inside, to sit in water, leading to much higher upkeep costs since they'd be sitting in water? Also, it's a hinge on a drain. That's not exactly begging for entry to Parkdale or anything. Go for it, bring a camera.

Haha, naw this is good info for a noob like me. Yeah I don't think I'll be going in anything like this, I was just curious about what they are/how they function. I have seen a couple of others that are larger. I mostly just wanted to be educated.

| | | I've come across these drains before and my buddies and i are in agreement that these types of iron doors are designed to keep water from flowing up into the storm drain from the river or stream it drains into while still letting water flow out. The ones we’ve come across are on hinges with no hydraulics and need to be manually pulled and tied open with a rope around a tree or something. these drains can also be accessed from above via man hole, if you can find one.

| | | Just discovered this a few days ago and have been waiting for the "new member post" ban to lift. This massive iron door was the first thing I saw, and got me super paranoid because I figured it was possible for it to open without warning and smash me to bits with water/etc.
Climbed up this ladder
The view from the upper level (you can barely see the iron door below, which opens towards the outfall)
This last image is really hard to see, but there were three of these smaller cast iron type doors that the OP showed a picture of.
I took these pictures and GTFO quick because I had no idea whether these could/would open anytime soon, whether they were mechanically or manually controlled, or what. Anyway, go easy, it was my first time in a drain =p Also, sorry about the image type (I hate the way it's popping up when you scroll over it.
