Just bought my first dslr...

Just bought a used a350 sony camera, came with a bag , lens, small portable tripod, extra battery and memory card. Any recommendations on anything else to get to help snap some good ue photos? (besides practice of coarse!)

Learn how to use the camera before you try to do anything too fancy. I've been shooting on the same camera for a year and I still don't think I know it really well. That's after several thousand frames and miles.

Shoot your apartment/home on a few separate occasions first. Get used to everything about it, then take it out for some exploring.

You'll want to get a general idea of how different your preview screen is from the shot once you've got it on your computer. Everything on my camera screen is brighter than it ends up once I put it on the computer...and for some time I shot with too low of an exposure because of it.

Get an idea how the lens is going to distort your lines. I had no issues with my cheap digi...all lines were straight. But some lenses, especially the ones that come standard with the camera, will literally fisheye your lines sometimes. Certain zooms and certain angles do it. Don't necessarily try to figure out these angles/zooms yet, just get used to how it will effect your first several explores. It might change how you're going to take those first few shots in an abandonment.

Otherwise, just learn its personality. Mine refuses to focus in certain light levels and I had to learn how to deal with it. Mine has some buttons that you have to be more deliberate with than others and I had to learn when to double-check if I managed to change the setting. Mine is kind of a whiner.

When I got my dslr, I bought a guidebook that teaches you every function of your camera, it helped alot, and I still go back and refer to it.

Use the tripod too, you'll be suprised how much it helps.

As far as taking shots, just get out every weekend and experiment. You can turn every situation into a learning curve, trust me. Also shoot in raw format if you can, the editing results are 100x better.

Shoot around 20,000 frames. Shoot daily. Read/listen constantly. Then you might do alright

I believe you mean XTI that camera is also fairly outdated... I'd recomend more general... ANY Canon Rebel

Sony a7II | Canon 5D mkII | Canon Rebel XSi | Sony 28mm f/2.0 | Yashica 50mm f/1.9 | Sigma 15mm f/2.8 fisheye | Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 | Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM | Sigma 70-200 f/2.8

no, i think she meant a

t1i
t2i
t3i

The OP just bought a camera, doubt he is looking to replace it.

I'd suggest investing in a cheap hotshoe bubble level, it will help you get your images straight.

Don't buy a "kit", the kit lens sucks and you'll be upgrading it ASAP, so skip it right off the bat if you can.

If you're looking for bang/buck I'd recommend getting a used or refurbished Rebel XS body + Tamron 17-50mm if you can afford it.

http://www.adorama.com/ICADRXSBR.html

keep an eye on amazon warehouse deals or ebay for a deal on the lens

http://www.amazon....1-1&condition=used

here's a copy for 350 with a small blemish:

Adorama is really conservative with their condition ratings. I've sold stuff in person at their nyc superstore.

Oh yeah, I went to the camera store today to scout future interests...as in when I get any money to my name for a payment plan.

I was interested in the Revel t2i. For a poor kid who's only had a Nikon D3000, is this a good choice? The step up, mind you, is to only give my GF the Nikon so we can have two and because I don't have a shit ton of money. I want some of the basic features my fucking Nikon doesn't have, even just AEB.

well i've had the T2i for several years now and JUST upgraded with a telephoto lens, i love the camera. it works great for me and even now i still don't have everything figured out on it but it has performed admirably. Take a look at my post in the mid-atlantic forums, those were taken with the T2i and the 18-55 lens it came with

Like said before, the Rebels are great. Iv been using my `kit 18-55mm lense for a year and a half now, and I love it. The t2i is a great camera, and significantly less money then the t3i. Which is good if your not using the video capability a ton.

Sorry, I'm going to disagree with most of the posters here. Especially if you are still starting out in photography what DSLR you have is irrelevant. There's nothing wrong with what you have.

The important thing is to actually learn about the camera you have and more importantly photography in general. Learn about exposure, aperture, ISO, and light as far as technical things are concerned. Then learn some basics of composition.

These things are MUCH more important than what camera you have. There are people out there taking amazing shots with cruddy cameras. Resist the temptation to buy more gear until you learn, gear isn't going to make you a better photographer at this point.

I love my T2i but the 1.6x crop is really starting to get on my nerves. I want the freedom of a full-frame sensor... but I'm not sure I'm willing to pay the price yet. Maybe when the 5D Mark III comes out there will be some Mark IIs for cheap.
