Check out my curves

I'm feeling pretty good about bracket and blends now...but the barrel distortion is starting to really give me hell, I can't ignore it forever.

Problem is, and I probably say it in every post here, my photoshop has no lens correction, it's too old. Only stretch, skew, distort, etc.

I tried to utilize it as best I could with this batch of editing but having to basically hack away at them with old technology normally compromises alot. So I had to be gentle.

I'm an idiot so of course it hits me later that if I want any critique I shouldn't have saved over the originals. So instead I'm just wondering how much the remaining distortion is botching the scenes.

Check please.

What lens do.you have? It's pretty extreme wide. The last one has it most. You've really got to find something that provides lens correct profiles. Makes a world of easy awesome. I'll try to find a safe place to download something for you without viruses.

I also forget what camera your using... ? I'd like to.know.

Also, I'm really into the first photo. The third one has significant distortion. I mean... you don't even really have to ask. You can see it clearly. Barrel distortion is swizzle distortion to me now! So watch it, or you'll get swizzled.

According to the EXIF data these were shot at 18mm using a Nikon D3000.

This leads me to believe the 18-55mm NIKKOR VR kit lens is responsible for the distortion...

Ah! I always forget to look at the EXIF. I figure the 10=20 because I deal with some major distortions issues too; i just have to work with it instead of trying to correct it later.

One of my past satisfied customers.

Let's be honest though, in real life stuff that's straight is straight - it doesn't bow outward. Why should a photo be any different? Take the extra minute or two, slam that shit through lens correction and call it a day.

Over and out.

Thanks, I know it sounds stupid but I'll have to save up for this next month. I'm just about to shift into a good job at which point I'll have the money to do more for exploring than just the gas to drive there.

So the lens, which is the one that came with the D3000 upon purchase, is just notorious for extremely bad distortion?

When I can afford it what's a rational step up for my next lens? How much does that kind of thing cost? Before the Nikkon, which I've had for five months, I only had a cheap digi.

Aside from no more dancing lines, what else would a new lens offer? How much clearer is 'the next step up' going to be from here?

Iirc, the first link is for a free distortion tool. I included the link to Ptlens because it's the one I actually use.

If you want an autofocussing lens you'll be limited to Lenses with integrated motors for your D5000. If I were you I'd work with the 18-55mm kit lens you've got until you figure out what else you need to supplement or replace it.

I'm not sure if it's 'notorious', but to give you an example, when I process an image shot with my Tokina 11-16 UWA lens I usually have to apply a lens correction setting of +3.2 to straighten things out. With your lens I had to apply a setting of +5.9 to make things look good. I don't think there's too much quality control on Nikon's end when they're churning out thousands of these kit lenses that probably cost $15 to make.

Assuming that you'll be keeping your kit lens for everyday shooting having a UWA (ultra-wide angle) lens for UE would be a good investment. The Sigma 10-20 is probably your best bet. There's also the Tokina 11-16 which has an f/2.8 aperture. I own the Tokina and I always stop down so the wide opening isn't a huge deal to me...

Aside from no more dancing lines, what else would a new lens offer? How much clearer is 'the next step up' going to be from here?

A good lens will offer better IQ (image quality). With that said, unless your dropping $1,000+ on a lens you will more often than not still have lens distortion, chromatic aberration, vignetting, etc...

Hope that's informative?

Here's one of your photos that I literally spent 3 minutes tweaking in Photoshop CS3. The door on the right isn't square so it was impossible to make it look perfect. Also did a quick color balance, levels, curves and high pass sharpening.

What's the downside to this new lens? What will it do worse than my standard lens I use now?

There are really no downsides whatsoever - other than losing 35mm of zoom on the long end. But that's why you keep your kit lens for when you need it.

You have to understand that wide angle lenses are pretty much one trick ponies - they enable you to cram tons of stuff into one frame but with a limited zoom range not much else...

The IQ will be much better and you'll be gaining 8mm on the wide end. For UE the extra wideness is super important because we're often faced with tight spaces when shooting interiors.

Go to your local camera store, bring your body and ask if you can strap some wide angle lenses on... You will be blown away.

Thanks, I'll drop by my local joint when I get some throw-away cash. How much do lenses normally run?

Yeah I could look it up, but I'm already responding :p

$400-500 for a cheap one. Sigma 10-20, Tamron 10-24

There's a $50 mail in rebate on the Tamron.

$600-700 for a better one. Sigma 8-16, Tokina 11-16

about $800-900 for Canon/Nikons.

I've had the 10-20mm, sold it, I intend on buying an 8-16mm when I get my tax return.

You've got to be very careful with your lines. 10mm can give you ugly (artistic?) distortion.

I have the Sigma 10-20mm and the Tokina 11-16mm. Both good but only the Sigma will AF on your camera.

I don't think the 10mm will be any worse than the kit lens he's using...

I imagine that's the engineers that left Nikon to start Tokina thumbing their noses at their former employer?

The sigma 10-20mm @ 12mm distortion is easy to take care of.

I liked the lens @ 10-14mm above that it wasn't up to my desires.

The other problem with the 10-20 is the 7D out-resolved it where-as the Rebel XT under-resolved it. It wasn't a good fit for either of my cameras. It would probably do much better on a 10mp or 12mp camera.

The level of detail pulled from my fisheye at non-optimum focus far exceeded what the 10-20 could produce with manual focus spot on.

I just got Corel Paint Pro X4, and learning to use the barrel distortion tool. It is not as expensive as Photoshop, but much easier to use, and a much better program. Especially after the bought JASC and kept their programers and designers. $79.99 at many shops or less, so easier to afford.

Check out B&H Photo and Video for some good lenses, better prices and very good equipment and service.
Sometimes using a Pastel filter will pull distortions out as well, might try a pastel 1, and see how that works. If you're using your flash, try using a diffuser to even the light. I have found using my soft box on my flash reduces these distortions more than using straight flash, no matter how I set my light's range (28-80mm).
