In Biddeford, Maine they took a gigantic rotting mill and turned it into event, retail, office, and manufacturing space, as well as residential space with apartments and luxury loft condos.

Turning mills into housing isn't uncommon here in Maine, but they are usually converted to low end/low income housing. This one is beautiful.

I definitely am impressed with this list coming forth here. It's good to hear about them. You know, I just recently went over to Asbury and saw the work... it could be a really nice place if they actually complete that.

Yea and get the shit out too if you know what I mean.

There's a mill Lowell they've turned half into condos. The remaining portion is rotted to death inside but it's too far gone to fix and waaaay too close to residences to demolish.

Yeah, it'll collapse in on itself someday. But if anyone can find a way in someday [1 year of no luck for me] it'll still be another playground for us for some while.

In central Ohio there have been three different theatres restored. The Midland Theater (http://www.midland...e.org/history.html), the Palace Theatre and the Southern Theatre (www.capa.com). They are all breathtaking now. They bring in some great acts and are really a treasure to their communities.

Waverly Hills Sanatorium was in terrible shape (though I wasn't complaining :]), thought it wasn't 100% abandoned since they held ghost tours there. Recently it was restored back to how it once looked. It's not nearly as creepy, but it looks awesome: http://www.thereal...s.com/Restoration/

I forgot to mention that the former Higbee's in Cleveland (yes, the one in A Christmas Story) was undergoing restoration when I was there in August.

Several Buildings in Hamilton, Ontario have been given a new lease on life, yet several still wait for a saviour.

Some that have been saved, or are in the process of being saved are;

The Lister Block, abandoned for over a decade has just been completely restored.

http://www.adventu...-and-after-photos/

The Pigott Building. It was abandoned in the 1980s when I explored it. It has since been totally restored and renovated to house nice quality condos.

The Auchmar Estate in Hamilton, once a Rich estate and manor House turned Convent, turned abandoned sits empty owned by the City, but an organisation has developed to raise funds to fully restore it to its former beauty.

Treble Hall has always interested me. I have stared at this attractive little building in the heart of down town Hamilton since I was a teen and watched it degrade. A new owner has purchased it and it restoring it again to its former beautiful self.

I look forward to several other historical beauties to find a saviour as well.

This thread makes me happy. I have seen a few abandoned buildings get turned into insanely high priced condos around here, but nothing of historical value that was preserved solely for history's sake.

I agree....the woodwork in that place is amazing. Along with the high ceilings and transom windows. I could drool over it all day.

Preston Castle in Ione, CA is being slowly brought back from the brink of collapse. A lot of the building has been shored up but still not yet accessible. Just did a photo day there a few weeks ago.

*cough* bullshit *cough*

Book Cadillac and David Broderick on the other hand...

David Stott, besides the Sky Bar (ironically located on the first floor and in the basement) I haven't seen anything else actually happening there. - the bar on the 34th floor was supposed to open Feb of 2012 and there are no other tenants.

David Whitney - so far I've only heard talking

Book Cadillac is a hotel,
http://deals.westi...xact_120810_NAD_FM

(note that this is not the Book Tower - same Book family, different building)

Here's the before - http://www.forgott...m/caddy/index.html

And David Broderick is opening in November as mixed use - retail and commercial on the first four floors and residential apartments the rest of the way up
