I shoot with a Nikon D90 and a 18-200mm Nikkor lens. I'm rather untrained in photography, just looking for some feedback on some photos. Such as a favorite, individual criticism, overall advice, or any other thoughts I guess. (forgive me for the images being so large)

(1) from a Mental Hospital in Iowa

(2) Rubber Factory near Denver (likes/dislike?)

(3) Ghost town in the CO moutains (lens flair good or bad thing?)

(4) An Old Beet Sugar factory (Likes/dislikes? is it over exposed?)

(5) Condemned house in Denver(likes/dislikes?)

(6) Tire factory in the Midwest (likes/Dislikes?)

I think number 1 is the weakest, im not a fan of the composure. Number 2 I love, the green hue of the roadway is really cool.

3,4 and 5 are my favorites.

3.. lens flare, I like em when they are natural. When they are added in post.. not so much.

4.. Love the DOF and comp.

5.. Love the perspective

For not being a "photographer" your stuff is looking pretty good. Keep it up.

gotta get in, before its gone forever

5 is really cool. Great perspective.

Besides the first one being a bit boring. I like 'em.

For not being trained in photography, you are doing pretty good. Formal training in photography is pretty useless imo. People who have taken "photography classes" usually still suck.

The first image is actually eye catching due to the detail in the switch. It could be better composed, but the inexplicable black cable kinda breaks up the image to make it a not so great shot.

1. I like this one, though I would like to see what it might have looked at if you shot it straight-on instead of at an angle.

2. The division of the frame is well done here- and perfectly straight lines!

3. Opinion tends to be pretty divided on lens flare. As the subject of your shot, I think it works. However, it does muscle out the building itself.

4. Certainly not overexposed. In fact, I don't think this would have worked as well with a different exposure. That being said, I would suggest a higher aperture to get the background in focus- or a lower one to blur the foreground a bit more, bringing it in the same ballpark as the background.

5. I'm neither good at nor partial to UE photography with people in it, so I'll skip this one.

6. I love good interior shots. This one just needs to be straightened a tad.

Overall, I really like your eye for subject. I know some people who have shot for years, but never develop the sort of compositional instinct that you already have.

My recommendation would be to familiarize yourself with the minutia of terminology (if you haven't yet)- just knowing what a particular word means allows you to consciously utilize it, even if it may not be what "formally trained" photographers would do. But hey, the rules are there to be broken.

Ya it's true. I took #2 back in August around 1:30 am. Later that night, I was on my way out conveniently as an office was doing a drive though the property. He spotted me and had me trapped in the building for about 3 hours before I found a way to sneak out without being seen. Luckily, that was the night that the whole department was looking for the florida siblings that were on the run after robbing a bank in florida and were reported to be around the Denver area....Then in september I tried to go back, they had a new guard that i didn't know about. After I got on the property, I luckily heard his keys jingling as he was walking. After hiding he came around the corner walking in pitch darkness, no light, and he had a german shepherd sized dog walking along side him... Ya that place is no joke right now.
