A plea for help

So, a few nights ago my desktop suffered some kind of failure in the PSU, and now the hard drive and CPU are totally fried, and I've lost almost all of my portfolio of pictures I've taken out while exploring.

Thankfully most of them are backed up online here and there across 3 or 4 photobucket accounts, my facebook and etc, but the vast majority of pictures I can't replace were pictures taken at meet and greets or meeting up with other explorers... So now I beg you guys, I know I've been out with a good number of ya'll from North Texas and OK, if any of you have pictures of me or that were taken when we went out, please please please link me to them here or drop me an email and I'll give you my email address....

THANKS!

that sucks.... about 3 years ago I lost 1 year worth of pictures of my son, 50g of music & a bunch of other stuff that I still havent been able to fully replace {all lost to a unmountable boot volume error in my hard drive that couldnt be fixed}. I had to learn the hard way to always back up my hard drive.

I hope your able to get it all back...

Have you tried hooking up your hd to a different computer? It may not be actually fried, unless of course you tested it. Sometimes those desk top power supplies can suffer strokes after power surges and cant supply power to some or all disk drives and or cpu's.

If the drive is in fact mechanically fried, you can take it (for a few hundred bucks) to a computer repair place and they can retrieve the data off the hard disk surface. Assuming the surge did not damage the hd surface and or cause a magnetic interference.

If it's worth it to recover the data, try TLSI data recovery in Arlington. They've recovered data from my dead hard drives more than once. Expect it to cost $100 - $150 though.

The data is still on the drive.

I have been through this nightmare numerous times.

The one software program that saved everything was Data Recovery Wizard by Easus.

I realize that this normally sounds hopeless, but recovery software does work and it gets around corrupted boot sectors. Saved my life several times.

But before you try it, hook up your hard drive to a different computer (as already suggested) and try getting your pictures off that one.

Bottom line is that there's a 99% chance the pictures are still on there. You just need a way to retrieve them.

I heard spinrite works better. It loads in DOS environment to get direct hardware access. Claims to restore actual bad sectors by adjusting head movement and getting fine magnetic data off. Used it before, it restores the HDD in its entirety, so have another HDD of same or larger capacity close-by.

Most, if not all, other apps that run inside windows are just trying to recover data where the MFT is no longer there, or the file pointers have been destroyed. Obviously, will not work if the sectors are damaged beyond what the circuit board and the controller will read and report back to the OS.

Now, if the circuit board on the HDD itself is dead, then your only ways of getting data off are either replacing the circuit board from the same model of a different HDD. Another would be to send it off to a pricier data recovery company where they actually get the data off of the platters. This may cost from few hundred to couple thousand $.

I have a few pics of you from some drains there in Dallas. When I get around to it I'll send them to you. Alternatively you can just go to my flickr and look for your self.

Also, get a pro flickr account, it's only 25 bucks. Unlimited storage.

Now what is the status of your HD?
Is it still spinning?

There are different methods you can try to recover data from the hard drive.

You can try it in an external case and it might work.
You might want to get a live cd of linux (knoppix) and try to access it with this.
There are other programs you can try to use in order to get your pictures back.

Last but not least I have to say backup, backup, backup.

I started doing this every month and there are free programs that can help you with it.

Here is one:
http://www.jumping...m/en/puresync.html

it's free for personal use.

Right today, before I read this, I am getting ready to clone my main hard drive.
All my pictures are on an external drive, and of course on the backup drive.

I have some Forensic software that can recover deleted pictures as well, let me know if you want to try stuff like this.

And last but not least, you can ask a company to recover your pictures. With they they try first the same stuff I can do, next they get the platters out and put them in a new case, last they can read platters outside of the case, but this is very expensive and I don't think you want to spend so much money.

Man that sucks, that is one of the things that does sucks about digital. I bought a 250GB external USB drive and I always back up my photos to that as soon as I get home.
