This is my first photo critique on UER, tell me what you think. Taken around 5AM in Hamilton, Ontario.

Some post processing applied, just noise reduction and distortion removal.

You lose a lot of detail with noise reduction. Also, the shots aren't very interesting, try a different perspective

What are you shooting with?
also, do you know where you are focused?
Are you using a tripod?

I'm shooting with a Nikon D3000 and the stock 18-55mm lens, at 1600 ISO (hence noise) to reduce shutter speed. As to focusing, both 1 and 3 were shot with autofocus on, which in retrospect were a bad idea given the low light.

I was not using a tripod this trip, however i intend to bring both a tripod and a gorillapod next time.

1. Use a lower ISO, like ISO100 or lower. 200-400 might be ok if you want to use a faster shutter speed. But you will find that the result of a 90 or 180 second exposure is worth the wait compared to a 10 second exposure.

2. Replace the kit lens as soon as you have the extra cash laying around.

3. When shooting in these conditions, autofocus is really not useful. The camera doesn't know what your subject is. The extra effort with manual focus is worth it. Zoom in on live view for the easiest focusing.

Thanks for the tip about iso. It never would have occurred to me to use a low iso in dark shooting conditions.

I am hoping to upgrade to a 18-270mm and some wide angle lens soon, I'm just tight for cash at the moment.

I'll turn my autofocus off and head up this weekend, and post my new pics.

beanbags make good tripods till you get a real one, and the worm's eye perspective can be pretty cool. Shutter release or 10 second timer are your friends, you'll shake the shot as you press the shutter otherwise.
