| | Success rate? < on 12/12/2011 2:40 AM >
| | | I had nothing better to do so went through and tried to figure what I basically considered my success rate at exploration. I've already made a timeline of all explores and attempts at exploring...it was pretty much both a "for the memories" scrapbook and also to chart how photography has changed for me. It's just a folder containing what I consider the best shot from each explore. So the formula was pretty simple...subtract trips I don't really consider urbex [a few pics were from an illegal dump or a hobo camp]. Subtract trips where I found a doable POE but chose not to go inside until a later time. Subtract trips where I'd already been inside before and just wanted a better shot of the exteriors, etc. From there figure how many failures there were and do the math. 118 total [in the timeline folder]. -15 'not real enough fo ya' explores. 18 fails. 82.5% successful. I doubt everyone has such an assininely anal setup for documenting their stuff...but how successful are you? How often did security win?

| | | I tend to divvy it up by sites, not trips, so here are some WAGs. 65% successes 20% successes that took a few tries 10% successes other places because the first place was too well secured 5% successes that were also successes for security/police. as a completed exploration of epic location. finding broken beer bottle glass in your pocket is extra points. the same applies to dates also. [last edit 12/12/2011 6:57 AM by cdevon - edited 1 times]

If it is a place the average guy would overlook, even if it is publically accessable, I still count it as urban exploration. The out of the way corner of a city park, the freight dock of a commercial building, or catching a look at a neighbor's vegetable garden all count for me.

I call this a very successful "scouting trip".

You got the shot you wanted of the exterior? Sounds like a success to me.

I don't document all my urban exploration trips, because most every time I walk out the front door, I'm on one. I like to take interesting routes to places I often go. Given the time, I like to bicycle or walk to nearby places and see what I can discover that I haven't seen before. The sidewalk usually provides a better view than the street. The alley is usually better still. The freight elevator can be more interesting than the passenger elevator. The back door or service entrance gives a different perspective than the front door. I also like to talk to people about things they find interesting and have them open my eyes to things I have overlooked. Funtrawox and I ran into state bridge inspectors while we were exploring the creek. They provided some tips to help us estimate the date of construction of bridges. I have admired a new business and had the owner give me a full tour including the room where his employees were counting the cash and his "safe room" where he can hide should he ever be robbed. Yeah, it is really cool when you infiltrate some exciting off limits place. But if that is all you are doing, you are missing most of the fun. Urban exploration is all around us. In my opinion, it isn't about keeping score. It is about keeping your eyes open and seeing what others miss. It is about appreciating the architecture, the engineering and the history of places. It is about learning things others don't know and have never thought to ask. Whenever I keep my eyes and my mind open, I have 100% success. [last edit 12/12/2011 2:23 PM by Keaven - edited 1 times]

| | | There are some good comments above, not sure that I evan top them! Only meet the security once but they let us go. Only have been conquered by one building that we could not find a POE. 99% Success in my book!

| | | I obviously don't have it statistically figured out but it's in the very high 90% I have been caught by Securitas/police once or twice. I've eluded or evaded Securitas/police more than once or twice. I have been thwarted by lack of POE once or twice. And I have simply not entered or abruptly left once inside, once or twice because my gut told me to. Not bad for only ever exloring 8 places huh?

| | | Only been busted twice out of like.. at least 50 trips. I have decided not to go into certain locations due to things like people around or things like that. But only actually been "talked-to" (Aka yelled at and shoved off the property) about twice.

| | | I've never been "busted", but recently I was spoken to by school campus security while shooting the outside of a sealed building. I feigned ignorance and he took my info, we chatted [very friendly] and he pointed me to the exit of the school campus it was on. I received a letter a week back with a warning that if I'm ever on the campus again I'll be arrested...so I'd appreciate it if you'd all refrain from running me off the road and into the campus front yard. Funny though, it was a building I'd been in the year before. He told me if I was curious about the inside [and he was] to check the internet system for photos explorers had taken. I didn't mention I could just check my hard drive.

| | | Let me tell you, I count scouting missions as success, for sure because if I don't end up going back it's because I tried and failed to get in (happened once), a squatter freaked me out (also happened once) or after going in I discovered that it wasn't worth the risk. Being a woman, I have to be much more prudent in my location choices and I consider every time I cross that fence, open that door or whatever a great time exploring. The only unsuccessful trip I had was one where I ran out of light. I was still acclimating to the fall changes.

| | | Never been caught by police or security, but have been thwarted by a lack of POE many times, as i don't like breaking in. Overall i'd say 90%
