I saw a show on the discovery channel called "repo men : stealing for a living" and the guys on there said that most any utility truck (such as water trucks, street sweepers, and snow plows) or other vehicles (crane, bulldozers, etc)that are stored inside of a fence or depot usually have the key under the seat, in the glove compartment or in the mirror/sun visor thing. so as long as you can get into the truck via slim jim or open door, your good to go.

Not only is that legally wrong and usually not true, such vehicles are some people's livelihood. If I showed up to work and discovered that someone had taken a joyride with the loader and broken something, I'd be pretty pissed. Pissed enough to hunt someone down and (severely) beat some ass, even though I don't own it, the company I work for does. Wrecking a piece of equipment that someone depends on to make a living isn't cool. A lot of that sort of stuff actually does require some know-how to run, so chances are something would be destroyed.

Any place with any sense, especially municipal yards, lock up keys at night and/or when stuff's not in use. Owner/operators are even more inclined to do so; hell even the POS garden store I used to work for locked up Bobcat and truck keys at night. I wouldn't believe everything you hear on TV...if you want to run equipment, get a job.

I was referring more to the previous posts, but...

I'm just saying, checking out construction sites is one thing, fucking things up for contractors and people who require said equipment to make their living isn't cool. Forgive me if you thought I was singling you out, yours was just the post I decided to quote.

THE ABOVE IS A QUOTE FROM THE TV SHOW ABOUT REPOSESSION WORKERS. I DO NOT SUPPORT STEALING VEHICLES OF ANY KIND. I POSSESS THE CAPABILITY TO STEAL VEHICLES BUT HAVING EXPERIENCED THE GREIF OF HAVING A VEHICLE STOLEN, I CHOSE NOT TO.

bobcats are definitely fun to drive...i did some stuff with habitat for humanity a while back and they let me move a huge pile of gravel because everyone else was busy and the guy in charge had to stick around to make sure nobody fucked up their job. sadly, it had just rained a great deal the week before, so i managed to get it thoroughly stuck in some mud for a while ... i guess it must have been pretty entertaining for everyone else watching me though, lol. As virual said though (a while back), they are key-start. they have a push-button to start it, but thats only after using the key ... its sorta like a backup safety measure i guess.

Nope. The keys are just like starting a car, just turn it and go. The pushbutton ones are keyless, and the woner sets a password on the touchpad. Only the older ones are keyed, most new ones are keypad. That's just for Bobcats, though; for example some newer New Holland skid loaders as well as Case machines are still keyed.

i guess maybe i was using an older model then. the guy who was in charge just told me that it would start up with the key, but until you pushed the green button, it wouldn't drive ... but no matter how old it was, it was still fun to drive, hehe.

I have a new question though. There's a section of purdue's campus that is under construction (there are currently 3 unfinished buildings right now, and there's talk of adding more later on). I made a location in the database http://www.uer.ca/locations/show.asp?locid=21401 if you want to see a couple pics. My friends and I didnt get past the top of that main staircase b/c we saw what looked like a motion sensor with a flashing red light on it. Instead of waiting around to see if it was a sensor, we left the area, just in case.

Our problem is that the construction company hasn't put up walls yet, so anyone meandering through there can easily be seen from anywhere outside, and worse, from the police station (less than a block away). Does anyone have any suggestions on how to be less obvious? Supposedly there is an unlocked entrance to the utility tunnels in the basement, but it involves exploring in plain view from the police station. We were exploring there once and saw a person on the porch of the police station, so we left before they could get over there and catch us. It's becoming rather irritating, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

How large is the building, and is it lighted inside? I've explored similar construction sites, and even without walls there are usually areas of shadow you can work with at night. If you stay towards the center of the building and try not to let yourself cross or pass directly by any lights you stay pretty invisible. If the tunnels are in the basement, find the stairs asap and head down there where they can't see you.

Turn off the internet and go play outside.

there are some shadowy areas, and they have some of the interior walls/rooms up, but it is VERY well lit. its a really big facility; you can see some pics if you follow the link in my previous post. Our biggest problem is trying to find the stairway to the basement. The actual location of the tunnels is on the east end, which is in direct view of the police station. we thought we might have found the entrance last time we went, but had to leave when we saw someone looking our way from the police station. like i said, its very well lit, so if we can see out, anyone looking at the building could see our shadows and/or silhouettes. Thanks for the tips though, I'll try them out and see if things seem easier

That was probably the parking brake.

edit: never mind, it's the green "Press to Operate Loader" button. I had to go outside and look, I've kind of lost my familiarity with IR machines after running Case's at my new job all summer. The bucket and arms will not move until you press that button.
