Fuck Me!

Sorry I ended up jacking your thread a bit, Chrisfilm. I decided to branch out and make my own.

So I've gotten a number of things accomplished in the past few months for honing my skills. Pretty sure I've got shutter speed down alright, I've recently been removing distractions, my composition is better...

Now I've been working to figure out aperture, and after some advice [thanks, BTW] I went out and gave it a test drive today. Unfortunately I was a bit distracted when rednecks surrounded the house at random but I kept shooting and eventually managed to sneak away ninja style.

How are they looking now?

#3 and #4 could be straightened, (try turning gridlines on if you have a dslr that supports it)

in #3 the outside seems quite overexposed, whereas the inside is too dark to see much. That would be a good time to use HDR.

I really like #2, it's a great shot, and your shutter speeds look great to me!

#1 - Darken your clouds a bit.
Personally, I would have tried to get the walls on the edges of the house straight up and down (it looks like it's tilting away just a bit), and shot/cropped it so that the house was framed with equal spacing on both the left and right sides.

#2 - This shot needs it's shadows, but I might have stepped it up 1/3. Enough to get a bit more pixel data out of the shadows (giving the option to recover in post-processing), while maintaining the detail in the highlight on the cement.

#3 - Bracket this shot. Either combine it with HDR software, or manually blend the shots together in Photoshop. This is a good candidate for practicing manual bracketing. Also, straighten & correct lens distortion.

Thanks for the advice and comments!

Do you mean lens correction? I always straighten the shots in Photoshop but it's an old version so I don't have lens correction and it complicates it. Gridlines...what is it?

I've never done an HDR, is it the best sure-fire way to fix the common window problem? Again, not sure if Photoshop CS has that option.

Via photoshop or was there a better way I could have shot it?

This is one area I get stuck on and hence why I decided to jump on figuring out aperture. My shots always become blurry if it's too bright or get noise if its too dark, I figure once I get the hang of aperture this is something I can normally fix. This issue...do I at least have the cause right?

Bracketing means...????

I thought about doing HDRs via manual blending in Photoshop but I'll probably need a tutorial of some kind.

Curious for some opinions on the last shot of the toilet, I think it came out the best of the day's work. Does that one seem like I got the hang of it even if just for one picture?

Not sure what you're working with in Photoshop, but maybe a "Select Range..." to isolate the clouds and then dropping an adjustment layer on them. There are lots of ways to do it, but I meant darken in post-processing.

When your brighter shots wind up blurry, what is your shutter speed? And, are you shooting with a tripod? I still have aperture issues myself, but I'd recommend always shooting at the lowest ISO possible (to reduce noise), prioritizing your aperture over your shutter speed, and using a tripod for anything longer than 1/4 second. If you're already using a tripod and doing that, then pretend I didn't say anything.

For the easiest route, try the demo of this: http://www.hdrsoft.com/
Or, to do it manually, try this: http://www.uer.ca/...d=1&threadid=49601

Varies by lighting. Now that I think on it I'm sure it's a problem balancing aperture with it. The light just turns things white and thus blurry if overdone--my problem has been that the line between too little shutter speed and too much is slimmer than I want.

As for the low ISO and tripod, always. I basically don't even use the camera without the tripod except for the most on edge 'be ready to book it' exteriors.

Thanks, I'll try to give this a shot sometime soon. Dumb problem, but my camera is heavy and I almost always shoot vertical shots...the camera's weight makes it slant more each time I take a shot -_-

Another recent attempt, seem a little better?

I have problems with my cheap tripod when I tilt it vertical. I can just recommend to adjust your legs then to straighten the shot.

And, the toilet shot is great.

Thanks, problem for me isn't the legs though. The screw loosens from the camera's weight. This is no problem for a single shot but if I wanted to make an HDR the camera will be at a different angle each time by just enough to ruin it.

Ah, Got it. Yeah, mine is like that too. It's worth getting a decent tripod. Too bad I can't afford... :'{

1: I see no need for this to be shot vertical. Exposure is good. Light is good. Content is boring.

2. Exposure is way under. You totally loose detail in the shadows. Pan the camera to the left. You want to see the rest of that pipe.

3. Bracket..... And...... Blend. Also, there is no subject Matter on the inside. This makes me wonder why I have to look at it.

4. Is fine I suppose.

5. I do like. The texture on the toilet is real nice. Try to bring down the mirror and window a bit just so they are not blown out. Also lighten the toilet a little. Remember. Your eye always goes to the brightest part of the picture first.

... Constructive criticism.
