go in drains
| | Re: Draining starter <Reply # 20 on 11/21/2011 10:56 PM >
| | | Posted by Jared Kat -do not enter a drain from a manhole if you can avoid it, find the outfall

I agree, I think this is shit advice Some drains don't even have outfalls, you'll never find the good ones if you're only looking for what's readily accessible by anyone [last edit 11/21/2011 10:59 PM by lxk_ - edited 2 times]

Why? I find it much nicer to get in way upstream via a manhole at the smallest bit and work downstream as it gets bigger and (generally....) more feature rich.
|
Saved me making a post to say the same thing. I love nothing more than finding a small pipe inlet knowing that every meter leads me closer to a bigger section or feature... or to the other side of the road ;)

The question is about getting started in exploring drains and is in the rookie forum. Under most circumstances, the outfall is going to be easiest route and better for those less experienced.

I can only base my opinion on how I did it.

| | | With a manhole lifter. They vary depending on the manhole. If you can't get hold of one you can fashion one from everyday objects. Some can be opened with a car jack winder (or similar T-shaped bit of metal) or a parachute cord and some bolts tied to each end. Gatic lifers that will lift most conventional manholes are available from some plumbing distributors and other knockoffs can be found on ebay

And if there is no outfall... Then you're back to using manholes.

| | | Every city has its own little quirks when it comes to draining so fielding advice from people all over the world probably isn't going to help much. What works (or doesn't work) in Australia might not be the case where you live. It's part of the reason why Predator's "Approach" is of limited use to people living in North America. In some cities you can go draining in flip-flops, other require chest-waders. Some cities have well-ventilated systems, other cities don't. Some cities have lots of outfalls, others.. you get the idea. Bringing two lights and not going draining when it's raining are pretty universal. "Watch where you step" is also a good thing to keep in mind, but you probably knew that one already. After that, everything else will depend on how your systems were designed and the extent to which you want to explore them. Outfalls are your easiest way in. Find one, go in and have a look. If you liked the experience, then go find another one. Repeat as many times as you desire. You'll figure things out as you go along, just like a lot of us here did.

| | | Since the outfall I use empties out right to the river, I always check the tide and go about an hour before the peak low tide to give myself a general two hours to safely explore. This site is helpful as it shows you a tide calendar for whatever region you're in. http://www.protides.com/

Some sewers/drains have maps available online, in my experience it is mostly cities(which is where most good drains are anyway!) There are websites, sometimes not all too useful however, that have drain maps available. Try going to "your town/city.gov" and poking around, you can also google search "your town/city Public Works" Then again, you can also give your local library a try of course. You'd be surprised at how much information one can gain from smooth-talking a librarian.

| | | I've recently found out that many cities consider drains to be public property, meaning anyone may enter at their own risk. Look into your local codes and make sure first and foremost. Also, anyone that has posted in this thread, HEED THEIR WORDS and UTILIZE INTELLIGENCE.
